why do children in Australia wear exaggerated sun-protective clothing ?

while in other famous beach locations like Spain, Greece, Thailand, Brazil they don't.

The kids here have almost 90% of their body covered when going to the beach. basically they only leave face and hands uncovered and use a hat, even when they go for a swim.

Some people say that's because the sun here is too strong, but then you don't see teenagers or parents doing the same.

Update:

ps.:exaggerated when compared to other countries

Since Australia is almost the only part of the world that receives the most intensive UV radiation due to the ozone hole. and the fact that we are closer to the Sun i mean the distance.

Because Australia has done a fantastic job educating its public on the long-term dangers of UV exposure. I believe their slogan is something like "slip, slop, slap", meaning slip on a long sleeved shirt, slop on sunscreen, and slap a hat on your head. The US hasn't made that kind of effort, and lots of people here even go to tanning salons and pay for UV exposure!

As for parents not heeding the same advice, well, parents all over the world have a tendency to be more careful about their kids' health than their own.

Australia probably has a better education program about the risks of sun damage - perhaps young children/parents are a major target for this campaign.
