At what age can children start wearing a watch?
I am thinking of getting a watch (inexpensive) for a child for his birthday... It has a digital display. Would that be appropriate for a 5 year old?

My four year old wants a watch. He can't read a clock with hands, although he's starting to read a digital clock, so I think yes. That would be a nice present :)
Go for it!

I would say at about three.
Let me explain that though; I worked in daycare, caring for children ages 13 months to 2 1/2 years.
I would have them look at the big clock on the wall, and I'd say "Who's hungry? When the big hand gets all the way to the top, where you see the 12, it will be noon. Then we can eat lunch!"
Some of the 2 1/2 year olds could comprehend that, although not all. I'd get the most response out of the class of 3 year olds, who I'd keep an eye on from time to time, when that teacher was busy. The older 3 year olds (almost 4) would actually give me a reminder every five minutes, that they knew lunch was only 2 spots away. I thought it was very cute.
Giving a child who doesn't have a clue of how to tell time, is the perfect way to begin teaching them, in little ways.
BTW, it's also perfect for driving. If you get tired of hearing "Are we there yet?" You can have them read a book or color, and tell them to let you know when it 1:00, because that means you're only 5 minutes away.

Sure, they love them. Very grown up but at the same time they have Barbie or transformers on them. Win/Win .My daughter who is 9 has lost every watch she has gotten since she was 5 within 6 months of recieving it. My son got one as a gift from the wedding couple when he was the ring bearer at their wedding. He rarely takes it off and yet to misplace it once. So yes appropriate, especially the inexpensive part lol

I'm going to say no because of the digital display. If it was analog it'd be perfectly appropriate, and educational.

The sooner the better. I gave my daughter a watch when she was 3 years old so that she'd know that every day when the clock says "5:30pm" she should get a beer ready for daddy. Sometimes she forgets though, so I have to yell at her.

Someone gave my daughter an inexpensive watch (she's 22 months). She can't tell time yet lol but she does like it.

My son got a pretend watch at 2. He wanted to wear one just like Mommy, so I got him one. A watch is fine. Especially for preschool/kindergarten age. They are starting to learn that stuff.

I think that would be a fine gift for your son. The only thing is, would he like to have it on his wrist? I personally don't wear a watch because I don't like to have anything on my wrists.
