How common is it for newborns to be resuscitated and/or "suctioned" after birth?

    They are NOT "all" suctioned; some practitioners keep current with the research/use common sense...

    Very hard to find out "how common" stuff like that is, but Henci Goer's "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" includes a lot of numbers on interventions like that, if you're really curious.

    If a baby has aspirated, that is, inhaled amniotic fluid before it was suctioned out of his mouth and nose or if the cord was wrapped around the baby's neck during delivery, chances are much higher that the child may need advanced suctioning and "resuscitation". If they haven't started crying within 45 seconds to a minute, massaging the chest is common along with oxygen.

    All babies are suctioned to clear the fluid out of their airways, so it is quite common.

    Being resuscitated is not common. It would only be reserved for babies who were born not breathing, which is in itself not common.

    They're all suctioned and rubbed down to get them started. Resuscitated, not so much.

    the doctor always suctions the baby to get all of the amniotic fluid out
