Typically, where's the best place to purchase pepper spray?
To reinforce exercise, I am hopefully soon going to be buying a bike. I've been working out in my dorm but the space is a little confined, so I feel like I can't reach to the best of my abilities. Instead, I'm going to try and do aerobics Monday and Tuesday at the Student Rec Center (which I've never done), my workout DVD on Tuesday and Thursday and ride my bike on Fridays and possibly the weekend.
The Rec Center isn't too far from my room, but it is a distance. I try to wait until I'm done with classes and free to do whatever. This is usually around 6. It's starting to get darker, so I figure I need some protection in the night. I'm sure stun guns may be illegal in the state of Pennsylvania and I don't have the training for that anyway. I'm in a small town and the biggest and nearest store is Wal-Mart. Where should I be looking for mace? Thanks.

Stun guns are not illegal in pa. They can be used for self defense. I will give you a link in a sec for a stun gun that you can carry.
Here is the best pepper spray for you. If you want a bigger can ok but get Fox Brand.

I'm not an expert on stun guns but Pepper spray I am. That by far is the best pepper spray. Stop by a police specialty store and talk to them or at a sporting goods store.
Do not get mace or CS. It does not work like pepper spray. Pepper spray you spray in the face. Mace / CS gets sprayed in the chest and the "fumes" do the damage. So body position and time work to your disadvantage with this stuff. plus CS / mace is flamable so if you have a stun gun as well and use both, like if the cs mace has no affect you will light the person on fire. then you will have problems of your own.

the public places that sell sprays are selling stuff that will barely work.the best places is a police supply warehouse.the very first poster got it perfectly correct. thru galls you can order the same spray the police use and can be guaranteed that it will work.look them up on the net and request a catalog.many items require that you be in law enforcement but the sprays do not have this requirement.the spray to get is the "MK-IV" in the 10% strength that is oil based. this will last 2-3 times longer than others.the above poster who reccommended the foc brand spray did not btell you anything about it.it is a alcohol based spray and only lasts for a very short period of time.alcohol based sprays are not used much any more. their life span is too short and it can be dangerous to use. it was a much used spray several years ago in california.the chp encountered a guy that the spray did not effect.they then used a taser.the taser ignited the aqlcohol and it burned the guy up and he died.they last a huge guge law suit over that.stay away from sprays that can have side efffects from other things used.the safest used at this time is the "MK-ID".it is oild based and safe.it also has a much longer shelf life than the other type of sprays.i have used both of these brands and have been sprayed with both brands.

Stun guns are legal in PA, and is far different then a taser. Tasers shoot electric nodes from a "gun" whereas a stun gun, you have to be within arm length.
You don't need training for them either, they sell some good 1 million volt stun guns online for 40 to 60 dollars.
If you still want mace or pepper spray, I say buy one online. You can find some very nice websites that carry nicely priced ones. Or as one person suggested, going to a gun store. Most will carry more then one type of protection (I own a stun gun and a collapsible metal police-type baton)
I suggest the stun gun, myself.

At an outdoors store like Bass Pro Shop or Gander Mountain. Get Bear Mace or a can of CS.

I've been sprayed with many different brands of pepper spray and I have to so most of it I can still function through but the "Top Cop" from ALS industries put me in instant hell. MK 3 is very hot but the Top Cop kicked my @ss...very badly I might add.
One reminder though...don't ever think it is over because you spray somebody and consider cross contamination to yourself. For effectiveness, range, and lower rates of cross contamination I'd get the stream version. The foam takes a little longer to set in and the Cone can get you too pretty easy if you are not very careful.

Army Eagle Navy stores, military surplus stores, check the phone book or web..and go before it gets dark,by the way I think pepper spray is better.you also need to ask you law enforcement agency about the rules and laws pertaining to that issue so if something happens and you have to use it you won't get charged.

Some hardware stores stock it, usually near the counter. You may want to call around.

Check out your local gun store, they have better quality products, you want at least a 10% concentration or at least the strongest available to you.

They have a few different sizes, and one that comes in a leather case with keychain. Cheaper then Galls too.
