Is it illegal to own these?

I would like to get a couple freshwater Snake head fish for my tank. Is it illegal to have those now? and if it is, who regulates what is illegal to have in my tank?and can I obtain a permit to own them? If it's not illegal where can I buy 2 in northern Michigan?

It doesnt list anything about it being illegal. But click on the link below the snakehead picture and it gives you numbers to call. I would say call one of those numbers and ask them about it.

Permits are usually only handed out for public aquariums or educational purposes. Im not sure if you could get a permit for private use. I would love to have a snakehead, but apparently Virginia is a popular place to live... lmao

I think it may depend on the state, not 100% sure but I know a lot of people do keep them as pets, in fact they were popular as pets in the 70's, I even have a book with them in it from then. Also it may depend on the species, theres easily 20 different species. You may not be allowed to own a northern snakehead, those are the ones that began polluting our waters here in VA. Best to check your states law on it, because I know some arowannas are illegal in some places in the states

Edit: I just can across this, it should help:

There are many different species of snakehead. The only ones that I know for sure are illegal in the whole country are northern snakehead, and giant snakehead. Other species probably fall under the state's laws.

Morons who release them into the wild are to blame for you not being able to own one in Virginia.

A lot of places with bodies of water have made them illegal. Only because they eat a lot of the fish used in competitive fishing. I would not recommend it. You cannot have a permit, it's not like that. I would not ever buy one because you can get your butt fined, and plus they are hell to take care of. They don't eat flake foods and are up to 3 /feet/.

According to Wiki it says they are becoming 100% illegal.

Its a recent excuse, used to justify illegal immigration. Truthfully, a decade or two before now many Mexicans would have probably took as a joke to consider them Native Americans. Some may have even found it insulting.
