Working for company in another state. Where do I pay state income taxes?

I recently moved out of state but am still working for the same company back in my old state. Do I file state income taxes for the state I moved from or the state I live in now? What if I worked part of the year there and the rest here?

    both states, likely.

you'll file part year return in both states. unless one of the states is CA, you'll likely end up paying the higher tax rate of the two states.

usual rule is that where you work gets first crack at taxing you, followed by where you live, IF their tax rate is higher than that in the state where you work.

If one of the the states, is CA -- you may discover that you're in deep do-do and BOTH states get to tax your income.

Dude you are going to need a professional CPA to help you out this year. I did the same thing. It was complicated and took 2 months to figure everything out. Income taxes are paid to both states. The state you work in will get more, but the state you live in will tax you for a road usage tax or something like that. Like I said it gets complicated and I cannot remember all the details. Good luck with it.

If you are an employee of the Portland OR staffing company, they are required to withhold Oregon income tax. If you employ persons as part of your project in Oregon, working for an Oregon business, you are required to withhold Oregon income tax. As for your Oregon income tax, you will pay Oregon income tax on your Oregon income only. You are required to file a tax return if your Oregon income is above a minimum amount, which it is from the nature of your question.

It's wherever you call home...ie wherever you get your electrical/water bill is which state you pay taxes from. Your payroll dept will handle all of your payroll taxes.

Not 100% sure of how the state taxes will work - but don't forget to hold onto your moving expenses because I know that you can write those off on your tax return.

If you worked in both states in the same year you will have to file for both states in addition to federal.
