It's because that since there's not many games in the NFL regular season that every game matters and that's why they should go into the most excruciating detail about it. Baseball and Basketball on the other hand have 162, and 82 games and basically if you lose one it's ok. Going on a 10 game losing streak isn't exactly good, but you can easily bounce back by starting a streak. Lose 10 straight in the NFL and you can get a top 10 draft pick.
Playoff baseball is one of the most exciting events ever, but even then it's just the fact that it's a 7 game series (after the divisional round) and that it doesn't start to get interesting to casual fans unless it's the 6th or 7th game (And if you get swept it's not a good series anyway)
Until NFL Network is available to everyone on basic cable and basic dish packages, you're gonna have to deal with football for 75% of the shows and most of SportsCenter (Not a problem to me, I love football)

Judging from the talking bobble heads they employ--Berman, Scott, Smith, etc.--I believe the "N" stands for "nitwit".
Football receives a lot of coverage because A) It's the most popular sport in America and B) It's football season. ESPN is notorious for promoting New England-area teams and with the Bosox taking a back seat to Tampa Bay that leaves just the Pats for the network to (over)hype. And they are an NFL team.
Trust me, if the Red Sox were in the Series ESPN would be shoving them down viewers throats, so listening to them prattle on about the NFL doesn't bother me.

Well, there's 32 football teams still playing and only 2 baseball teams. Of course they're going to talk about football more. Baseball gets more than their share of coverage in July and August.

I feel your pain - I really get sick of the fawning almost gay love they shower on football but I must admit what I do get a kick out of is that little dude who looks like a scrawny little chicken who is their "senior football annalist". If there was ever a contradiction in image...

NFL, right?
I've never seen a nested acronym like that...but I kind of like the idea.
[as an aside...how can you ask a sarcastic question and NOT expect sarcastic answers?]

Actually it's a shout out to all the anchors, experts and sideline reporters. It stands for "nitwits."

No, it stands for New England, because all they talk about is the goddamn Patriots and Red Sox.
