Widescreen TV's. Do you let the picture fill the screen or do you prefer the correct ratio?

I've got a couple of friends who think I'm stupid. If a programme was filmed in 4:3 ratio (standard old square screen) and shown on a widescreen 16:9 TV, I have to have the bars down the side so the picture is in the correct ratio. They want the whole screen filled even though it looks squashed.

What do you do?

Proper ratio is the best. Because that's usually how the show was filmed and meant to be displayed.

Before widescreen TVs and before widescreen was accepted as the norm, many people always wanted full screen. When they saw something in widescreen on their TV, they'd get mad about those "black bars" on the top and bottom, even though that was how the movie was supposed to be presented.

Now, your friends are just as ignorant as those people who blasted widescreen.

Now I'm weird. I can put up with a 4:3 picture filling a 16:9 screen because the black lines do my head in. However - I can't stand a 16:9 picture squashed up on a 4:3 screen - I have to have the black lines at the top and bottom to make it look normal. :-D

I use the right ratio so the image isn't distorted. It defeats the purpose to have hi def and then distort the image, so they're stupid, not you. Then again, I have HD so a lot of what I watch fills the widescreen.

I'm like you I prefer the proper ratio. Especially when watching DVD.

I just watch my programs in wide screen and don't worry about it.
