Uh oh. Tooth infection. You need to make an appointment with your dentist ASAP - call tonight and go before they close, or tomorrow morning and get yourself in early - make sure they take you as soon as they open. Feeling pain in the tooth (as opposed to just sensitivity to heat/cold/sweets) means that the infection is in the nerves of the tooth, caused by an untreated cavity that has created decay in the center of the tooth. With pain this severe, its more likely going to need a root canal, or possibly extraction if the infection progresses to a bad abscess (noticeable by a painful bulge in the gum). Your infection needs antibiotics before it progresses to your jawbone or bloodstream.

The sooner you are seen, the less painful treatment will be, and the sooner your painful toothache can be taken care of. This sort of thing will not go away on its own, so you MUST be seen ASAP.

In the meantime, gargling with hydrogen peroxide (do NOT swallow), ice on the outside of the mouth (so it affects the tooth through the flesh), and OTC pain medication, like ibuprofen or Tylenol, may help a little - though nothing will touch the core of the pain until you see a dentist. The dentist will give you an antibiotics script and possibly an additional one for pain medication. Depending on the condition of your tooth and the progression of infection - which your dentist will determine by taking x-rays and performing an oral exam - you may have to complete a full course of antibiotics before the dental procedure will be preformed.

In the future, remember how important dental hygiene is! Brush at least twice a day, if not three times, and floss!! Also, you should be seeing a dentist every six months for regular cleanings and check-ups. It's as important an appointment as your physical, and it prevents problems like this from occurring by early detection of any issues and prevention of continuation of decay. You need to have these check-ups, or you will continue to have dental emergencies! If you haven't seen a dentist in the last six months, have them do a full work-up when you're there tomorrow, to check for any other problems. You don't want to let little things fester and become serious. Make an appointment for a biannual visit!

Good luck, and make that appointment!

You might consider some otc remedy which contains eugenol. Eugenol, is a colorless aromatic oil found in cloves. It relieves dental pain. Then see a dentist. Most dentists will make an effort to see someone in pain. A toothache can lead to an abscess which could require a root canal or extraction. If untreated an abscess can lead to a systemic infection that could lead to hospitalization or even death. A toothache can be a serious thing.

Clove oil:Is great to use for toothaches. Apply a little on the affected tooth for some time and then rinse with warm water. Boil 5 grams of fresh peppermint in 1 cup water with a little salt. And rinse mouth well with this .Peppermint is an antiseptic and contains menthol which relives pain .Try out http://useinfo-dentalcare.blogspot.com/ for more details.
