Recently upgraded from Windows XP Professional to Windows Vista Home - problems?
I recently upgraded from Windows XP Professional to Windows Vista Home Premium. I'm having some problems..
1) A lot of the programmes I had installed under XP - eg Winamp - aren't immediately visible under Vista, and don't appear Start / Programs, the only way to use them is by opening the "windows.old" folder and running the executable
2) I want to uninstall Norton Anti Virus, but when I run "Add / Remove" programs, it isn't there. I've deleted every Norton / Symantec folder I can find but it still loads at start up.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
How do I disable a Windows service? (Sorry, not so good when it comes to IT these days!)

You will find that several of your old programs are the older XP versions and what you need to install is the newer updated Vista versions. Whilst some are compatible with both the installation was set to run with XP and now needs to run in "Vista mode". There are small differences and ideally the best option is to reinstall the latest version, copy any saved settings from the old one (import if an available option) and then just delete the windows.old folder to regain space.
The best bet with Norton is to go to here http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf... and download the uninstaller for your product. This should disable all running services and clear the hundreds of registry entries that get left behind when you allow the product uninstaller to run.

In the start menu, programs there should be on that says start up. What ever is in this will start up a program. This may be where the Norton thing is coming from. Delete it if it is there. The other part about your XP programs was explained by another answer.

1) Create a shortcut to the executable and put it where you want it.
2) Norton installs as a Windows Service. Disable the service.
