Porsche 911 for first car?

I'm almost 16 and a half and my parents agreed to get me a car up to 25k because I opted out of going to a private highschool. I've been looking online and it seems I could probably find a 99-01 911 C4 for around that price. What I want to know is if they are safe/ have side airbags (I can't find any crash test ratings), if they are at least fairly reliable, and if they cost a lot to maintain.

Update:

See, none of those answers answer my questions. I really don't care what your opinion of its suitability as a first car is, since I'm sure if your parents had given you the option you wouldn't have declined either. And in my state, if you get pulled over for "drag racing" or speeding before you're 18, you get your licence suspended.

The model you are speaking about would be an early 996 and i must admit i am not sure about the maintenance costs. I have a 997 C4S and it doesn't cost a lot at all to maintain. It only needs serviced once every 2 years or 20,000 miles and i have never had any problems with mine. If you really are considering buying one my advice would be to call a porsche garage and ask them your questions.

Although you could buy one i would recommend something like a BMW M3 or 330 because it's got much more room, is still pretty fast and you won't have to worry about leaving it when you've parked it. Also people won't think yoiyur a little d**k if you drive one of those.

If you do decide to go for one just make sure it has side air bags (i think they were an option) and a good history i.e.e hasn't ever been crashed and has been maintained thoroughly.

    Hope that helps

OK, I'll try to answer your questions with as little bias as possible. Did your parents approve this idea? Cause I have a hard time believing they did!!!

Out of curiosity, I just did some research on '99-'01 Porsche 911s and they seem to be fairly reliable cars from the reviews I've seen. I'd try to get one with as low miles as possible to help ensure less maintenance costs. I mean about 50,000 miles or less. But if the car DOES need repairs, you'll have to take it to a specialty Porsche dealer and it will cost a lot more than a regular shop would charge.

The insurance will be A TON for you!!! 16 year old + car that can go 170mph does not equal low rates. Even if you are a safe and mature driver, the insurance company doesn't give a damn. They go strictly off of statistics.

How's safe is the car in a crash? Well, if you get in a high speed frontal collision with a rear engine sports car, it's not going to protect you nearly as well because there's no engine in the front. Otherwise, it's probably not gonna be much worse than a regular small car like a Honda Civic.

I'm just gonna warn you that other people might alienate you a little bit if you drive one. But that's a choice you're gonna have to make.

    Hope that helps!

insurance will be out the roof but porsche says it all it is reliable they make their cars are good i dont know if they are safe but what small car is? cost to maintain - probably a lot i mean tires on a porsche probably cost 250-300 each oil changes of course ur going to want synthetic so thats 60-70 bux a 911 is not fuel efficient either so you will be at the pump every couple days pouring in gas and it aint 20 bux for a full tank either, OVERALL porsche is a great car and when i have the money if ever i will own a porsche gt3 or gt2 BUT they are expensive and cost a lot to maintain but if you have the money then hell yeah! go for it.

    This is just so wrong.

A Porsche 911 is not a suitable car for any "rookie" driver. The handling and braking idiosyncrasies of these cars are not suited to novice drivers.

You do not just 'hop' into a Porsche and simply it drive away. You start with other sports cars and work your way into a Porsche. Even experienced Porschophiles (spelling?) get caught up by these vehicles from time to time. And anyone who says he hasn't is a liar or has never driven these cars the way they were intended.

I have driven many sports cars over the years and I love Porsches. I would never own one as my only vehicle though. And I grudgingly admit that the newer Corvettes fall into the same category.

I got a better idea! Go get a job and buy your first car, like I did. A Porsche is for veteran drivers not some kid who has never driven a car. You may want to think twice about your skills and be realistic, because you don't want hurt your self or others just to have a Porsche.

If I were you I would buy a Luxury car (Like a Lexus LS400), because it will help with insurance, and it will give some good driving experience, not to mention its Lavish and decently fast. Take it from me they are great cars I have owned mine for years now. In fact I got 136,000 miles on it now and it still has NEVER been to the shop and its 10 years old. The maintenance is cheap too.

    They are very reliable.

But expensive to maintain, extremely high insurance for one of the worlds best sports cars, even for a driver with 20 years experience.

Side airbags are optional. Not standard. That means it could have side airbags, if it was originally ordered with some.

Why don't you get some driving experience with something you will not race stop light to stop light first? $25,000 for a first car is ridiculous since it will not survive your first year without damage to it, and if you are male under the age of 25 you will pay a heavy price for insurance. It is an exceptionally poor choice for a first car.

It is a very reliable car but things can go wrong just like any car. I have a Boxster with a 3.2 ltr engine and it has never let me down in 60,000 miles. Go for it if you can afford it.
