How come the largest "democracy" in the world can't run a democratic election?

America's system is the byproduct of a competitive history such that there are differences in voting methods between states but, by-and-large it would appear that the system works somewhat but the 2000 election (and court-decision) has tainted the image of democracy in America.
(India's elections are wonderfully democratic with surprisingly little corruption considering the size of the electorates.)
The 'democracy' vs 'republic' thing is really old; the words are synonymous these days.

We are not a true democracy. We are a republic with democratic principles. Pure democracy is mob rule. No one wants to live in a system like that.
I don't know if we are the largest. Maybe India is with its population at 1.1 billion.
We can run a democratic election. What is wrong with our system is we have eliminated some of the checks and balances with electronic voting machines. In some cases there is no paper trail.

The largest democracy in the world is in India not in the U.S.
The election itself is democratic but there are some major technical problems.

Do you mean India because that is the largest democracy in the world. My answer would be because too many people aren't educated enough. Get my drift?

There will always be some corruption, but I think our elections are more honest than a lot of countries' elections. I've worked the polls several times, and never seen a hint of vote tampering. The networks have reported how simple it would be to tamper with the voting machines, but most of the people I've worked with are interested in getting the vote counted correctly, not skewing it in their favorite candidate's favor.

Read ART4 SECT4 carefully... it's not talking about Party affiliation, but about what type of Government we are Constitutionally guaranteed.
We have Free, open Elections, and for the Presidency, we have a Constitutionally mandated Electoral system (see ART2 Sect 1), which actually endures that it is a fair Election, fair to all States, and the People in them.

We can. If you're expecting different results from a democracy, then maybe you don't understand what a democracy is. Majority rules the minority. There's going to be conflict along the way.
Also, we were founded to be a Republic, not a democracy. Read the Constitution.

We do You might want to realize that we are a Representative democracy. we vote people in to office to speak on our behalf. Never have we had a true democracy as the term defines, not does any other country in the world.

Because people aren't perfect and we all make mistakes. Some are intentional and are illegal like the Republican that is being prosecuted for setting up a coffin with Obama in it next to an early voting center in an urban area. Others are innocent mistakes like not knowing that you have to be a US citizen to register to vote and the application not specifying this on it which can have even a legal immigrant deported.
Personally I think we need to have the optical scanning ballots for everyone. AND we need to amend the Constitution so that everyone is using the same voting method through out the country.
