screw to fan belt pulley won't loosen?
I am trying to remove a screw to release the tensioner pulley on the fan belt how ever the threading has gone. It looks like either a torx headed screw or alum key...i tried both and when you turn it it just spins inside the threading and the screw won't loosen....so i next tried hammering the next size up torx head into the screw to undo it and still no lucky...any ideas of what i can do?

Don't "remove the tensioner" until you have removed the belt. I don't know what kind of car were talking about but there may be a nut on the back of that bolt your trying to remove or it may be that there is too much tension on the bolt for it to back out. Make sure your on the tensioner and not the idler pulley. You should be able to move the tensioner with a wrench or a ratchet depending on the make of the car. I might recommend getting yourself a repair manual for that vehicle. Really a must have for the do it yourselfer. Well worth the money.

The pulley is held by a tensioner on the belt that takes anywhere from a 13mm to a 17mm , depending on the vehilcle. Using a bar you should be able to release the belt and then put on a new one. That tensioner is spring loaded and shouldn't be taken apart for any reason whatsoever. You might try either looking up your vehilcle on Chilton's and looking up belt tensioner. It sounds as tho your apply pressure to the wrong area. Hopefully its not the torx in the middle of the pulley

NO<< STOP WHAT YOUR DOING,, That will break something,, The Tensioner pulley is setup on a Serious spring return,, They main thing you need to loosen it to remove a belt is a Breaker bar or a good size ratchet, Down by the bolt you were trying to work on is a square hole, insert the breaker bar or ratchet in there and push or pull so the pulley goes away from the belt,, and be careful letting go with belt off it will go farther so release slowly,,

take the belt off and take the tensioner off with pulley attached if it really is stripped. get a new tensioner w/pulley assembly.

there is one other factor to consider the bolt that holds the pully to the tensioner is usually a l/h thread. so if you are trying to replace the bearing and pully try reversing the thread.
good luck
