If the Padres are looking to rebuild, why do they want to resign Hoffman?

He's a future HOF'er, and you usually afford them special treatment, like giving him the opportunity to play his entire career in San Diego, and go to Cooperstown with an "SD" on his hat.

that baffles me as a padres fan

they want to rebuild with Hoffman who is 41 and they want to get rid of Peavy who is 27. i guess its just respect to a man who is the face of the padres and apparantly they don't want anyone else to be the face

Maybe he's like the new 'Tony Gwynn' the face of the Padres.

1) When you got a guy like Hoffman, its respectful to keep a guy, especially when he isn't down the drain.

Or

2) They don't think they have a guy ready to take on the closer role.

I guess he is the Franchise Player and when he has been there closer for so long, fans would hate to see him in another uniform.
