My friend has a 97 Malibu, the engine gets hot, but it does "overheat"?

I have looked at the engine and under the car and do not see any fluids leaking, but I do smell a strong odor of anti freeze. I am definitely not a mechanic.... any suggestions ?

yeah it might be the thermostat. take that out you really dont need it especially if you live a warm climate area, and the heater will still work, my moms car dose the samething and everything works fine. no leaks or anything. i have replaced the radiator pulled out the thermostat, but it still gose above the middle line, i dont like that i like the temp to stay at the first 1/4 mark at most. check the fans they might be going slower than they should be and need to be replaced. other than that i have no idea. just make sure it dosent get to hot. good luck.

Replace the thermostat. It is there for a reason. Possible it is an intake gasket is bad leaking antifreeze into the engine.
