    can be pretty serious.

in lungs its called pulmonary edema and has many causes including heart failure and other pulmonary/lung diseases.

as for fluids around her heart, that can definitely be pretty bad.

heart is surrounded by a fibrous sac called the pericardium.

if enough fluid (or blood) fills the sac, it can compress the heart and keep it from pumping blood effectively throughout the body. this can lead to heart failure and can lead to fluid in the lungs. this condition of fluid in the pericardial sac of the heart is called cardiac tamponade.

she needs to see her doctor and depending on the severity of the tamponade, the doctor may need to do a pericardialcentesis. basically s/he sticks a needle into the sac space of the heart and drains the fluid.

some signs of cardiac tamponade include a weakened pulse and a distant muffled sound on auscultation with a stethoscope.

anyway, good luck to ur mom.

it can result in congesitive heart failure, however, it is treatable without surgery in most cases. Diuretics which are medicine that help the body urinate more often to get rid of the fluid in the body - some are Lasix and Aldactone. My 2 year old son after his open heart surgeries had build up of fluid and was put on both medicines and he is fine, if the fluid makes the heart a little weak, they may also put her on a medication called Digoxin to help the hearts chambers beat more comfortably.

Someone I know has this exact thing too..it's called Congestive Heart Failure..you can google it and find lots of info on it. The person i know that has it also has really high blood pressure which i think is part of the reason she has congestive heart failure..she was in the hospital for a few days but now she is back home and on some medication and doing better...Look it up though.

I was diagnosed with this after an abnormal EKG and had to get an echocardiogram, I haven't been to the cardiologist yet, I go on the 8th of Oct, but my doctor said I had some fluid around my heart. I don't know how much, how serious or how I got it. I am scared to death.
