Curious as to why Republicans are SO anti public health insurance?
This was a big issue for many of the McCain votes,
calling Obama a communist because he believed that tax payers money should be used for certain things, and one example being Health Care.
A public health Care system.
In England, there's the NHS system, National Health Care System, which supports any one that's in need, free of charge- when needed.
Sure, there CAN be cues, and long waiting lists- but there's private health insurance for those that can afford it, and of course- cues and waiting lists are considerably less.
In Australia, we have a Public Health Care system (Medicare) and a number of private health insurance companies.
Tax Payers money, in Australia does contribute to the public health care system, which enables people to get vaccines, immunisation programs for free, hospital cover and GP Bulk Billing and so on.
Without a Public Health system in place, so many peolle wouldn't be able to afford health care, and it puts alot of people in great danger.
Unlike the UK system, not all of it's free, you still have to pay for standard things, which arent in hospital, but are heavily subsidised by the govt.
What I want to find out, is why people are so against this public health care system in the US, when it's so benificial to everyone.
Just to add,
I'm Australian, not American, so I live in a country that does have Public Health Insurance, and it is absolutley a vital thing to have here. It doesn't take days, to get a broken leg seen to. It doesn't take days to be admitted in hospital. I've got both public and private insurance, and really- many people here would be better off without private, and just public.
It goes without saying, our population of 21 million only is considerably less, but all the same
^.^
By the way, cheers for your answers guys.
It's been an issue I've been discussing at Uni in one of my classes, and this helps to see the different views.
Anyone watched sicko? Michael Moore film?
man, sorry- ONE more point./question
What if you didn't believe in the public system, and tax payers money paying for others health care.
What if you, or a family member or friend in the future became ill, and you didn't have pre-existing private insurance, and when you went to apply, you were met with the problem, so many people out there have -
You had a pre-exisiting condition, and you weren't entitled to get private insurance.
What if you couldn't afford to pay that huge sum for care, or hospitalisation, and you were stuck.
In those situations, wouldn't a public system in place be the only way to get help? (if you couldn't pay upfront)

They don't want their money going to other people. They think that people should be responsible for themselves. They think they shouldn't be responsible for anyone else. They believe that people should "pull themselves up by their bootstraps". Frankly, I think that reasoning is incredibly selfish and disgusting.

Anyone, who is familiar with the values of the republican party (not what it became) still want to hold on to those principals. I think it's time the party goes back to basics and rebuild it's base, outside of the elements that tarnished it's heritage.
Quoting the GOP: "I BELIEVE the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those critical functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations, and that the best government is that which governs least."
For people who might hate the republican party, please take an objective look at the links below and learn what the ORIGINAL party was. As with many other people in my party I do not feel my party is where it should be.
Like him or hate him, John McCain was a step in the right direction for the party, he helped illustrate the major differences between, what the party currently is and what it used to and should be.

Most of us would LOVE health care. Unless you have a government or steady corporate job, you just don't go to the doctor unless it is an emergency. My wife went to the emergency room feverish and hurting from a urinary tract infection, and it cost about $500 to get a test and antibiotics.
The good capitalist answer is that competition is the most efficient system, and government can't run anything. Also, there is the issue of politicians deciding your health (though many of us agree this would be better than nothing.)
And, the best argument those pesky conservatives have is that this is where all the drugs are created. If there was not the incentive to make billions at the expense of the health of the American people, why would anyone make new drugs.
These are going to be huge issues as America gets poorer and the world demands their share of resources.

A new study that compares international cancer survival rates demonstrates what opponents of socialized medicine have been saying for years: socialized medicine kills.
The study finds that Britain (whose much-touted "universal health care" system is held up by the left as a model for America) has among the lowest cancer survival rates in the West--drastically lower than the United States, which has the world's highest survival rate.
Researchers attribute Britain's dismal numbers primarily to late diagnoses and lengthy waiting lists for treatment. But long lines and waiting lists are necessarily endemic under socialized medicine. Just as a "free" grocery store would not be able to keep its shelves stocked, a "free" health care system necessarily lacks sufficient resources to adequately treat all those seeking care. The result is thousands of unnecessary deaths--and millions of grief-stricken families.
Rather than adopt Britain's deadly socialized health care system, we should end the government interference which is increasing the costs and reducing the quality of U.S. health care, and increase freedom in medicine.

What is going to happen in the US with Public health is a horrible
mistake. 45 million people have no insurance
Public health for the US is what we call UNIVERSAL HEALTH
so it will not be free to the public
People will have to buy Health Insurance from Insurance Companies
I am a nurse and I know that it will be a disaster in the US
The Doctors will just say *not..I do not take your health plan.* and they
do that now when the Insurance Plan does not pay them what they
want..First we will have a shortage of Doctors and nurses and then
we will have to wait a long time to even see a doctor
Now we have 350,000,000 people in the US..and Our economy is
failing..the Dow jones dropped 500 points when Obama got elected
We are fighting wars in several countries..do we just stop the wars?
Where is the US going to find the money for UNIVERSAL HEALTH?

Nope. Public healthcare DOES NOT make private healcare obsolete. So I totally agree with your point of view.

Hey Ive had Military medical care all my life and way before they brought civi drs in... It stinks... You were herded in and out like cattle, they had no sympathy or respect for one and yes I waited for days to get an appt unless of an emergency and have waited in LONG lines... When I had my kids I made sure I lived the furthest distance from any military base so I could use a civi hospital.... I also throughout my years have had my own healthcare through work ( as my husband) and use that more then military hospital... Ive paid in much monies to have GOOD quality health care... You get what you pay for and as Ive stated before I will refuse to pay for some lazy azz person on welfare to get and EXPECT the same as I have paid in for for years... To them I say get up off your LAZY azzes and go to work and get your own damn health care and quit expecting handouts like so many of you want!!!

Big business makes a fortune in health care (twice what they make in Canada)
PS: Canadians live 3 years longer, and we are 1 inch from the USA

first of all many low income will sue the hospitals on a drop of a dime so health care is extremely expensive so why should i help pay for some low life when i can purchase my insurance ,its funny that an illegal immigrant is trying right now to sue a hospital that was doing free surgery on her husband 50,000dollars to save his life ,but they are sending him home to mexico where he can continue getting the care he needs ,the wife wants him here in the us and the hospital to continue giving free health care like he lives here legally, but try explaining that to a dumbass liberal

We are going to get this healthcare system started here in the U.S.A. within the next 4 years. As the richest nation on earth we should have had it decades ago.
The GOP has always opposed any social program that would benefit the people. They have been opposed to the Social Security Retirement program since it's inception.
Americans over time tend to elect some of the most ridiculous leaders (Bush) is a classic example.
