my Min-Pin had puppies how long do i have for tail docking?

I have heard that its the first 1-5 days or 1-10 days and even 10-14 days. i was just wondering when would be the best time? is it possible to have the tails docked while they are neutered or spayed or is this too much trauma for such a little dog? the mother was a rescue and we quickly found out she was pregnant and we have been doing all we can to be accomadating but i am new to this and i want to do this right. thanks

The best time is around 2-3 days. At this point the puppy's nervous system is not fully formed, so docking won't be traumatic at all. You'll need to make a vet appointment right away because you don't have a lot of time. Spaying and neutering is done much later, usually around six months, so there is no way you could wait that long to dock their tails.

edit: There are reasons beside vanity to dock the tails. Min Pins have very sensitive, brittle tails that are prone to injury. This is why the breed standard calls for them to be docked. Doing it now won't hurt the puppies at all, but if you leave the tails long there is a risk that the dogs will injure them later. This would be much more painful and it won't be easy to fix.

Hi Fish...Thankyou soo much for taking her in.. :-)

Ideally, the tails need to be docked before about 5 days...At this time the nerves aren't developed enough to actually "feel" pain, only pressure..This way there's no need to risk general antesthesia...It CAN be done during a spay/neuter, but this will be an actual surgery at that point and the healing process will be much slower and more painful..When they are itty babies, it will heal very very quickly..

I have to also mention that OhlDoDol brings up a very good point..The pups are probably not purebred and in my opinion, there really isn't any need to dock the tails, so why not just leave the little babies be ?

2-3 days of age is the typical age. There's a common belief that it 'doesn't hurt' at that age - this is simply a lie. It is most certainly painful, but they do recover fairly quickly.

It's OK to have them done at spay/neuter too but talk it over with your vet - having it done under anesthesia is easier on the dog but recovery takes longer. Or, if you're not going to be selling or showing the puppies, try leaving the tails natural. There's no law saying you have to dock them at all.

Since the dog was a rescue, chances are the pups aren't pure mini-pin anyways. And without papers they can't be shown, therefor it isn't necessary to dock their tails at all, as it'd be done purely for aesthetics.

I'm sure most vets would dock the tails upon spay/neuter if you asked, however (not a breeder or an expert), I believe breeders get vets to dock tails while the pups are awake, but extremely newly born.

1-5 days. Any older than that and they're nervous system would be developed fully and it would hurt to dock them at that age, so what I've heard is day 4 is around the ideal time to dock.

Why do you want to dock the tails? Are you going to show them, probably not since she's a rescue. Just leave the tails be, why put the pups thru the pain. Of course it hurts. They are usually done by day 2. Please be sure to get the female spayed ASAP. By the time they are old enough to neuter/spay, it will be very expensive to get done, it will require a regular surgery.

The best time to have the tails done is on the third day. I breed Rottweilers and that is when we get that done. If it's earlier than that it can be detrimental to the puppies, if much later then it is much more painful and traumatic for them.

1-3 days. After that it's major surgery and not worth doing.

Horrible thing to do to a dog.
