Gay people are asking for special treatment rather than equality?

That's what an anti gay marriage question stated a few moments ago on here. I always thought for two things to be equal they had to each have the same amount. Just for an example let's look at the fact that I am married in the eyes of the state I live in, and I have two good friends who happen to both be male and cannot be married in the eyes of the same state. Doesn't that mean we are unequal? So how in the heck are they asking for special treatment? They seek nothing more than what every heterosexual person in this nation already has. Isn't that the textbook definition of "seeking equal rights"? So help me understand this, how does seeking equal rights equate to seeking special treatment? I just don't get it.

Update:

Note: I really should admit my selfishness here. I do indeed suppport the gay community, but I supporting myself here too. I strongly believe if one person's rights are denied then no peron's reights are truely secure.

Update 2:

Exactly Sassy, whom does it hurt? The answer is of course that it hurts no one and is therefore no threat to public well being.

Sadly Toff, you are correct, it makes no sense, but you must remember that since the U.S. become a theocracy of sorts in 2000, religion and religious leaders now dictate both policy and law. It is unfortunate that Americans cannot see the irony of fighting against the Taliban all the while becoming a Taliban-like nation.

Excellent point Toff. I was thinking almost similarly Darren J. Although I think it's fundamentally wrong to deny the GLBT community a right to marriage, mainstream heterosexual society views us just as what you described. And because of that, we are viewed as inferior and extremely deviant. By the sheer amount of gay jokes, we won't be taken seriously.

Darren J, I think you offered some great suggestions on how we can possibly turn this around.

I fully agree with you. I am certain that it will not be too long before the idea of a ban on gay marriage will seem absolutely absurd. The passage of prop 8 was a terrible blow but it is far from the end of the fight. The law changes all the time we just have to keep persuading people that "gay" dose not mean "inferior."

    It's and image problem.

Gay's have the unfortunate stereo type of being promiscuous, aids, non-committal, and addicted to deviant-sexual practices (anal sex). The parades that flaunt giant penis's and scantly clad men and women definitely does not help their image.

What if they did toy drives during Christmas like the Hells Angles, or cooked turkey's for the homeless... They need to change the perception, of sexual deviants, poor me, I'm taking whats not given to me whether you like it or not image. The few fanatical gay's actually make it worse for every day gays.

If Gay people organized them selves into charity groups... the poor selfless gay groups just give from the goodness of there hearts. People will be a lot more sympathetic towards them.

Most opposition to gay marriages is religion based. We were not required to follow the bible or religion the last time I checked. The bigger question is "How and who does it hurt"?

requesting equal rights in no way equivalents to requesting special treatment.
