Sophie's origin?? Do you know from where this name originates?

Or how it came into being? Or Sophia. Why was it so popular 100 years ago? Thanks all.

    I found these for you.

    Sophie

Variant, of French origin, of Sophia. In the English-speaking world, where it has been popular since the 18th century, it is often taken as a pet form of Sophia, and is sometimes spelled Sophy.

    Sophia

From the Greek word meaning “wisdom”. The Eastern cult of St Sophia seems to be the result of misinterpretation of the phrase Hagia Sophia “holy wisdom” as if it meant “St Sophia”. The name became popular in England in the 17th and 18th centuries. The heroine of Fielding's novel Tom Jones (1749) is called Sophia Weston. In recent years, its popularity has been further increased by the fame of the Italian film actress Sophia Loren (b. 1934). In the Scottish Highlands it has been used as an Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Beathag (see Beathan). Derivatives: French, English, German: Sophie. Low German, Danish, Dutch: Sofie. Norwegian, Swedish: Sofia. Polish: Zofia. Czech: Zofie. Hungarian: Zsófia.

Pet forms: Low German: Fieke. Russian: Sonya. Polish: Zosia. Czech: Žofka.

    Hope this helps.

All I know is that it means wisdom and that it is of Greek origin.

As to why it was so popular a hundred years ago I don't know, but it's actually more popular now so I assume it's just because name popularity moves in cycles.
