  • Italian Recipe Ingredient Translation?

I have an Italian cake (dolce torta) recipe that needs a little help. I translated it but one ingredient I'm confused about:

1 cucciaino lievito in polvere per dolci....which I translated to: I tsp. powder yeast per cake

I bake very often but because this really IS a recipe from Italy, I wondered whether it really used yeast. I decided that maybe what it might really mean was baking soda or powder to make the cake rise. Can you explain??

    AND....

also what would be 20 cl. Panna Liquida?

    Thanks for all your answers!

  • Does anyone know anything about chestnuts?

The real food kind, silly! I've been wanting to make some chestnut food, and when they came into season this year I was lucky enough to have a tree nearby to collect hundreds. They were beautiful, mahogany colored nuts, not like the ones I've bought in the store or on the street, that are darker & bigger. I couldn't cook with them at all : (

    Can anyone explain this?

  • What can I do about these tapes?

I'm cleaning up and have some old VHS tapes that I used to tape special shows and documentaries. I'd like to excerpt the specials and save them---how can I do that? How would I possibly save/burn to DVD? Thanks.

  • Should this handicapped guy have gotten deported?

Just read an article about an guy in Florida who got deported by the hospital that treated him. Seems the unfortunate guy was massively injured in a accident in the truck he was a passenger in. Had been a healthy, vital, working illegal immigrant sending money back to Guatemala. Then he became a brain damaged bedridden patient. The hospital treated him for 3 years, brought him back up to about a 3rd or 4th grade level and could do no more. This cost a bit more than $1M. They decided to send him back to Guatamala. In that country the Minister of Health accepted the responsibility. Now the guy's cousin, who was his legal guardian, is stating and making a lawsuit that the hospital deported him illegally. Really??

Does the hospital and this country have an obligation to treat, and take care of for life, an illegal immigrant, when American citizens, and legal immigrants (do we really have any?) often cannot get treated right here in their own country. They must fight insurance companies and medical centers for some attention to their health issues. Some even travel OUT of this country for treatment.

They say this will be a ground-breaking case. Opinions?

  • Is the media making things worse for the Gosselins,?

than they really are? Some female commentator last week started that BS about how the kids are being exploited and now THAT has become the new issue. I wish they'd leave that family alone.

I think if you say that about those children, then you might as well say that about ALL children on the large & small screen. I mean, what about the Duggars with their 18; Little People, Big World, especially their son who is also a little people; and what about the Olsen girls who started as babies or the boy on 2-1/2 Men? You know Raven Symone was put on the screen as a pre-schooler too. Child ACTORS are conciously exploited by the adults around them. But these children are doing better than most, and seem pretty well adjusted.

  • Are you a competitive person?

Have you been OR do you THINK you are?

Do you think there's anything wrong with competition? At any age.

Many times nowadays, especially with kids under 12, caregivers tell kids everybody's a winner!! Even the kid who didn't do anything---isn't that socialist thinking? And do you think THAT'S fair?

Kids see things very clearly so I'm sure they recognize the unfairness of this. What about you? What are your thoughts on competition?

I think it's a fact of REAL life and people do a dis-service to children by these statements and could cause real disillusionment as they get older. I am a competitive person, btw, always have been. I also didn't have that propaganda told me.

  • What do you think of Korto's clothes on Project Runway?

Do you think she should win? I think she does great tailoring and in a couple of episodes she should have been the winner. She makes great jackets (I like jackets). She & Lianne are the two best this season. I like Kenley's stuff too,
