I would be careful with the weight, yes. I hope he is eating low-fat foods along with watching carbs and exercising a little each day, like at least a 20 minute walk or better. Insulin has a tendency to make you put on weight but I believe you can concur this by the right diet and a little exercise.

Generally, type 1 diabetic children tend to be slim. Your endocrinologist can help you manage both insulin and weight. It's important to remember that even low sugar and no sugar foods still have calories so you must still be mindful of high fat foods and high calorie foods. Being overweight is a bit of a problem because it can make you more resistant to insulin and you need more and more to lower your blood sugar.

Exercise is great for kids with diabetes, it helps regulate blood sugar so much when you get into a routine.

I have a 16 year old son who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 9. He's played football, basketball, wrestling, and now is on his high school crew team.

Type 1 diabetes is definitely not linked to weight, like type 2 diabetes is. You do not become a type 1 diabetic because of weight, like you would if you were a type 2. I have heard that insulin can make you gain weight, and also you can gain weight if you were recently diagnosed and had keytones in your system up until diagnosis. After you start to become healthier, you can gain weight back that was lost prior to the diagnosis. Prior to my diagnosis, I was eating huge amounts of food and losing weight at a ridiculous rate. After being diagnosed I gained back the weight I had lost. Also, I would make sure your son isn't having a lot of low blood sugars and eating more and taking in calories just to get his sugar back up.
