Sighting in .243, and ammo help, please!?

I bought my daughter a Rossi .243 combo for her 13th birthday, was time to get her into using scoped rifles.

1) Any recommendation on ammo types for deer hunting with that rifle?

2) What is a good range to sight in at? 100/150yards?

3) what is the effective range of the .243 against a whitetail deer?

Use the Winchester 100 grain Power Point bullet. Sight it in to hit 1.9 inches high at 100 yards, then you will be minus 7.8 inches low at 300 yards.* Maximum effective range is 300 to 350 yards.* According to the Winchester Product Ballistics Service Manuel for 2008.*

The .243 is a small caliber. The heavier hunting bullets will perform best. I would stay within 150 yards or so. Atleast until she has lots of practice. I would sight it for 100 yards. The maximum deer range of a .243 is about 200 yards maybe a little more. The problem is one of ethics, can you ensure a quick humane kill? It will take a while to reload a single shot rifle.

I've use a .243 and know a number of deer hunters who love them. I like a 100 grain bullet and the Hornady boat-tail spire point is a great deer bullet. I sight in so I am 2 inches high at 100 yards. This should be close to dead on at 200 yards. Effective range? A proficient shot with an accurate load should be able to take deer cleanly at 300 yards if they take broadside shots.

The effective range is about 200 yards, but you really should try to get closer. Ammo, I am partial to CC its always ejected better from my rifles, and I have yet to find a dud. Start with a paper target sighting in, if your using a scope, then start at 50 meters. If your using open sights then 25 meters. Make sure she knows the basic fundamentals of marksmanship. Hold it steady, fire after/before breath, aim at the target make sure that the cross hairs are where they should be, and squeeze the trigger don't jerk it. I wish you both happy hunting, and hope you get the big one. Hope this helps.
