Good rifle for whitetail deer hunting?
I want to buy a new rifle, mainly for whitetail deer hunting. I already have a scope in mind.
Rifle: Remington, savage, etc... I want either a *30-06* or a .308. I prefer the 30-06.
Scope: Bushnell or leupold. 3-(9 or 10)x(40 or 50)
what do you think? And I can get a discount bushnell scope.
also, DON'T WANT TO SPEND A TON OF MONEY! 4-6 hundred on the rifle 1-2 hundred on the scope.

If your budget minded consider a rifle chambered in .308..... Yeah the hunting ammo costs about the same as 30-06 but when you are target practicing off season the .308 FMJ ammo in bulk is down right cheap!!!!!..... The 30-06 is a little to much for deer.... Yeah many guys hunt with the .30-06 but it is still slightly to large......
The .308 is a better choice..... Check out this cartridge guide....

Check out this Remington 700 SPS.... These sell at the gun counter for a little more than $500.....

My Remington 700 is topped off with a Nikon scope.... These are accurate, reliable and have been a pleasure to use.....

I target shoot more than I hunt.... That's why I chose the .308... Its more cost effective and is more than adequate for white tail deer... Some folks even think the .308 is a little overkill.... I think its perfect...... Depending on how much you shoot the ammo over the long run will cost more than the rifle... So a bad ammo choice can be expensive.....

If all you are going to shoot is white tail, then either will do. But if you some day wish to shoot an Elk, or a Black Bear, or a Moose, then the 30-06 is a better choice.
I say buy a Remington in 30-06 with a 24 inch barrel, and you will have a great shooter. Put a 2 to 7 scope on it, and you have a perfect hunting gun for shots 25 meters to 300 meters.
If all you have is a total of 600 dollars, then look into a HR1871 rifle. A stainless Handi Rifle in 30-06 will run about 250 to 300 dollars. Then you will have 300 for a decent scope. It is better it spend the cash on a good scope than a perfect rifle.
Can't hit what you can't see.
Good Luck.

You are right on track. I myself prefer the 30-06 to the .308. Only reason is that I reload and I can make a "hotter" load with the 06. I have a Winchester model 70. You said you didn't want to spend a lot of money. I would go with the Savage. They are a little less pricey and a great quality rifle. My dad has a savage 25-06 and he loves it. I have a red field scope on my 06 I think I spent about $90 on it. it is a fixed 4 power. I have used a bushnell and they are high quality scopes.

For my perfect deer rifle I personally would probably pick a 7mm-08 Remington. This round came about by necking down a 308 Winchester case to accept 7mm bullets. When it comes to deer hunting, this round offers everything a person needs. The trajectory is flat enough to be effective for long range shooting out west, and with a 140 grain bullet is still carrying around 1500 ft/lbs at 300 yards, which is more than enough to take care of any deer.
At the same time, it's not too overpowering up close at woods ranges like some of the larger 7's and 30 calibers tend to be. It does everything that some of the more powerful rounds can do, but with its mild recoil in most guns, it won't kick you like a mule. With the popularity of this round, finding a rifle chambered for it is not a problem, and there is a good variety of factory ammunition to choose from if you're not hand loading.

Well when i started deer hunting i used a leaver action 30-30. I Loved it and still love it today. They are relatively cheap i picked up one for $250 used without a scope. spent $120 on a nice scope and i pick deer off at 200+ yards. If you do buy this rifle get a Marlin 30-30 not a Winchester because marlins are easy to mount a scope on and Winchesters require a gun smith to mount a scope.

Well, it depends on the kind of country you are going to be hunting in, if it is thick country, lots of brush and trees, then a scope is not going to do you much good, if it is open country (crop land, and open pasture) then the 30/06 would be a good choice, as far as a scope goes, the leupold is a better choice, much better quality, you get what you pay for, trust me!

If you must, spend less on the rifle and more on the scope. If you have to find a used 700 to afford a $300 Leupold, it'll be worth the trade-off. And 2-7x will do as well as 3-9x, perhaps even better.

go with a savage in 30-06. itll take any game in north america, savage makes a darn accurate rifle for the money, and as far as a scope goes, ive never used bushnell. im personally a fan of leupold vx2 if you can afford it, or a redfield.

the Remington model 700 and the x-bolt bot shoot sub MOA right of the box and are chambered in 30-06. the 30-06 is perfect for white tail deer.

I have a savage 110 30.06 have have used it from everything from white tail dear in Texas and Alabama up to moose hunting in Alaska. I feel this is one of the most versitile rifles you could ever buy. All you have to do is change the grain of bullets from 150 or 180 for deer up to 225 or 250 for larger game.
