religions have put forward creationism as the answer to evolution. But in doing so, they make a claim that is both unscriptural and unbelievable. It is that the heavens, the earth, and everything on the earth were created by God in 6 days of 24 hours each—yes, in just 144 literal hours! This teaching has caused many to ridicule the Bible. But is a “day” in the Bible always 24 hours in length? Genesis 2:4 speaks of “the day that Jehovah God made earth and heaven.” This one day includes all six of the creative ‘days’ of Genesis chapter 1. According to Bible usage, a “day” is simply a measured period of time. A “day” with Jehovah can be a thousand years or several thousand years—as were the creative ‘days.’ On this point, therefore, the Bible account is reasonable and compatible with true science.—2 Peter 3:8.

The Origin of Life

How do advocates of evolution explain the actual origin of life? They say that some billions of years ago the ocean surrounding the earth may have become an “organic soup,” though still lifeless. Then, they explain, ‘a particularly remarkable molecule was formed by a most improbable accident.’ Miraculously, this reproduced itself to form other molecules that clustered together to form a living cell. Could anything sound more fantastic? The writer who gave this description stated in his foreword: “This book should be read almost as though it were science fiction.” Yes, fiction, but hardly science! National Geographic has said that the programmed instructions (DNA) in one tiny cell “if written out, would fill a thousand 600-page books.” How ridiculous it is to say that the living cell created itself accidentally in some primeval soup!

Far more reasonable and understandable is the explanation given by the Bible writer David, who wrote at Psalm 36, verses 5 and 9: “O Jehovah, . . . with you is the source of life.” As advocates of truth, we must support that basic Bible teaching

Jehovah's Witnesses are not Creationists. They believe that the universe, planets, and earth itself must be untold millions of years old.. ..

While Jehovah's Witnesses do not pretend to be privy to the particularities of exactly how the Almighty created the spirit realm or the physical universe, they do note that the creation account in Genesis uses an interesting phrase: "[created] according to its kind".

According to Hebrew scholars, the term “kind” here means a created or family kind, but with those terms' older traditional meanings and not the modern scientific nomenclature of organisms. That seems to indicate that each general family organism "kind" was directly created, rather than allowed to evolve from a previously existing "kind".

There is no reason to assume that interesting "in between" or so-called "almost there" fossils are not simply extinct species in their own right. Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the bible is in complete agreement with true science.

Firstly it would help to clear up the misconception that evolution comes about by chance or was an accident. That just shows a lack of ignorance and understanding. If you want to understand properly how the theory or evolution and natural selection works try reading something written by someone who knows what they're talking about, like The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins.

The theory is fantastic because it makes so much sense.

It is plausible that on this planet there existed water, carbon dioxide, methane and ammonia. In the lab these natural substances can be put in a container, have some sort of energy supplied to it, and after a few weeks it turns into a weak brown soup, perhaps like the hypothetical primeaval soup from which life began, and in it you would find molecules more complex than the ones originally put in: amino acids, which are the building blocks of biological proteins. Presence of amino acids in any case are taken to be evidence of the presence of or potential for life. Chemicals lead to biological molecules in the right circumstances.

Further lab experiments that simulate the chemical conditions of eath before life have yielded organic substances called purines and pyrimidines, the building blocks of DNA.

Thus the principle is that we started with simplicity which becomes more complex.

I, for one, am not religious. That's not to say that I don't believe in God, I do believe in some sort of higher power, I just don't know what it is and I'm not involved with any organized religion. I therefore consider myself to be agnostic. That being said, I tend to side a little bit more with science rather than what is said in the bible. Here's my problem, with all the thousands of religions and theories of how life began, how do you REALLY know which one is accurate? Perhaps there is a little bit of truth in all of them?? This is the reason that I personally don't belong to any religious group. I think that it's great to have faith and to be dedicated to a particular religion, so don't get me wrong. I'm not against religion. It's just not for me. I find it rather confusing and since I could never genuinely believe EVERYTHING that any particular bible teaches, particularly about how man came to be, I could never be a part of it. I can't be a part of anything unless my heart and soul is 100% invested.

I really don't know how we came to be on this earth. I do believe that humans evolved from primates and that clearly is not taught in the bible, but all the different ideas about how any forms of life started on this earth confuses me as there are so many theories.

I'm just thankful for the life that I have been given and I believe that I do perhaps owe thanks to "God" or whatever higher power is out there watching over us. The concept of how life began has always intrigued me, however, I do not let that or any other religious beliefs control my life. I live by my own morals and values that I believe to be true and correct.

Sorry if I got a bit off topic, I could really go on forever and ever on the subject. In a way I hope that we can someday discover the absolute truth, in another way I don't. My reason for this is that the mystery is really what's keeping so many religions alive today, and a lot of the religions have been around for thousands of years. It would not be an easy concept for most people to grasp if scientists could 100% prove how life began because I have a feeling it would debunk many of the ideas and theories which many religions are based upon.

When put so simply "remarkable molecule formed by most improbably accident", it does sound silly. That is not what anyone thinks. Experiments performed under similar conditions have demonstrated component molecules of DNA will easily form. It took, however, many millions of years of molecular collesions for even the most primative DNA to come together, which given the time scale and the total number of molecules bouncing into one another, is suddenly not very improbable at all.

The fact that the Bible states the world was created in six days has nothing to do with 144 hours.

If people actually READ the passages, and they would see this. For instance, on what day were the sun and moon created? The FORTH day! So if we measure days based on the earth rotating from sunrise to sunrise, how can that day be measured before the sun existed?!

  • 1 decade ago

yes it was a 24 hour day

The evening and the morning were the day.

Adams life starting counting on day 6 of creation.

    Gen 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

Gen 5:2 Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

That was the first day and first year of his life.

Why do you ask? Do you doubt that a God with supernatural powers could do such a thing? When you doubt these kinds of possibilities, aren't you just trying to pacify the non-believers, or are you resolving your own limited minds. If you can't grasp this one, how is one ever able to grasp the premise that God ALWAYS existed?

I totally agree with ur point!! In fact, we muslims also believe in creationism!! And I personally think it is silly to say that life,a s wonderful as it is, came to be by mere chance or 'accident'!!! I think only a brain deficient person can reason as such.... I personally have not read the bible, so I will not comment on it saying 'days' or anything as such, but I definitely agree with you- life DID NOT began with mere chance!

first off... time is different in different places. a thousand years in heaven could be a day on earth, or the opposite. plus god is all powerful so it would be simple for him to say BE and it was.

Tera -- how does going to the Psychology Forum mean you'll get some quantifiable feedback? I like what Steven D. said --"How can you go behind our backs like that?" Just because these people like to psychoanalyze people doesn't mean their input is any more valid than your G&WS people.
