Are police and Firemen considered Veterans? ?
I know their job is important, but I always thought they fell under a different type of Veteran status, one of their own brotherhood and not the United States Government. And after they retired or were injured.

Veteran:
1. a person who has had long service or experience in an occupation, office, or the like: a veteran of the police force; a veteran of many sports competitions.
2. a person who has served in a military force, esp. one who has fought in a war: a Vietnam veteran.
Alternately:
The most common usage is for former armed services personnel. A veteran is one who has served in the armed forces, but usually not someone who had a dishonorable discharge. It is especially applied to those who served for an entire career, usually of 20 years or more, but may be applied for someone who has only served one tour of duty. A common misconception is that one had to have either been in combat and/or has retired from active duty to be called a military veteran.

No, not in the strictest historical sense. However, sometimes it is used to describe someone who has served for a long period of time for the public. For example, one may describe a beloved retiring police chief as "a veteran of the police force".

Well, what do you consider a veteran to be?
If you consider it a person who puts there life on the line for the country then yes they would be considered a veteran. But I think a Veteran is someone who serves in a military branch.

As a fireman - no, we are not. We are local employees, not employees of the United States government.
