How many of us Atheists knew that "Evolutionist" is now a dictionary word?

Apparently it is now in Webster's, though I don't know if it is yet in any British English dictionaries.

Ho hum. At least I lose no credibility by admitting that I was wrong.

Sorry if I gave anyone a thumbs-down over this, though I don't think I did.

Update:

Having seen that the word originally got coined in the 19th Century, I am not as surprised as I once was. Evolution used to be supported by a small minority, and as such, followers of the theory used to be labelled "Darwinist" or "Evolutionist".

Update 2:

And I'm probably going to give the ten points to Siren, because she has the prettiest shoulders...

So it is, I just checked Merriam-Webster's online dictionary. How disturbing.

    So is homophobic.

    A 'fear' of homosexuals!

I don't know any one that is scared of homosexuals.

I cant be bothered to look up the definition of 'evolutionist' I expect it is something along the lines of 'a belief in the theory of evolution,?

It would be difficult to define a 'Christian' they seem to have settled by ' admit to the Christian church by baptism'!

Near enough I suppose, I have always failed to get a clear cut definition of Christian, I'm pretty certain they are not all baptised, very difficult to tell, there are around 1500 different 'Christian' sects.

I must look into this definition, the dictionary is implying that a Christian must be baptised?

Very interesting , I think I could use that some time some where.

I've known of its existence for many years as a job description (like plumber or electrician) here in the UK, but not as a creed or belief.

You can't simply call an atheist an evolutionist unless they work in the life sciences dealing with evolutionary issues. Might as well call us astronomers for supporting the big bang or atomic physicists for supporting nuclear power. It's a bit daft.

    I'm a gravitationalist

    and a bang-ist

I may also be a scientificialist and a hereticualist, I just have to double check with the Pope first.

If those are real words, the Re-Al-Frankenization should be a word too, and the santa-clausification of MLK

The point is, words can be made up at will, just like statistics can be made up at will.

14% of all Americans know that.

  • I checked my 1996 Webster's, and it lists it, originating 1855-60.

Still I don't really like to be called an evolutionist.

Speaking as an atheist scientist I don't give a crap!

The fact that the word "creationist" is in the same dictionary does however deeply offend and disturb me!

    Webster`s ?

Is that a foreign dictionary ?

That hardly counts then does it, if it is to be accepted as an English word, one would at least expect it to be in the Oxford Concise.

Is American-Christianist in the Wobster`s or whatever it was called ?

English used to be such a beautiful language. Now it's reduced to the assorted use of initials and words like OMG>>>evolutionist.

I became aware of it on R&S a while ago. Of course I still think it is as sensible as calling someone a gravitationist or electromagnetist - by rights these should now be words too.

It just goes to show that language is a whore that we must try to make into a virgin.

Oh, don't feel bad, these are the same folks who say that gay marriage is against the dictionary when it isn't....so you're only as wrong as them in this one thing....
