Can Dr. Bronner's or Vinegar Be Used in a Steam Cleaner?

I don't really want to use the stuff that's made for it. Too many chemicals and smells.

I don't think it will harm the cleaner, but if you are using steam why do you need anything additional?

My advice is to use very little soap. The company who rented or sold the machine makes more selling soap than on the machine. Soap is bad for your carpet as it will become gummy and absorb more dirt. I tested wet carpet cleaners for years. When I clean the floor I use a small amount of soap, vinegar and dilute with water for units that have a soap container on the first pass. The second pass is pure water. Dumping the used water in a lawn or field will be a better solution for the waste as it is full of dirt hair and fibers.

I have found that most any soap will work in one of these machines as long as it is not too thick or contains bleach.

vinegar is very good as it will kill dust mites.

I have used Dr. Bronner's Lavender Castille Soap in my Steam Cleaner and it worked great. Castille soap does not suds and if you have a scented version then it smells great too.

  • White vinegar yes, without question.

Dr. Bronners.....I'd be more careful about. You could get too much, and have too much soap residue/suds. If you use Dr. Bronners, be VERY sparing.
