Survey for Creative Theory: What is 'writer's block'?

Thanks for looking into this post. :)

My final exam for my creative theory class explores the phenomenon that is traditionally called writer's block. I am looking for some different perspectives in the subject.

Please know that the writer's block I am describing to you does not apply only to writers. I believe that it can occur in orators, sculptors, painters, dancers, and philosophers as well as writers. With that in mind:

1. What is writer's block to you?

2. What techniques do you use to overcome the block?

Thanks, everyone. Your feedback with help me greatly.

Update:

I appreciate your feedback! I tend to write about my blockage to try and 'dislodge' it. Quite often I'll find myself writing about how annoyed I am to have this stupid block, and then *wham*. I've got the solution.

It's emotional. Look up not too complex definitions of Emotional Intelligence. The more you press yourself, the more you obsess. Intuition comes naturally, especially if you relax, drop negative judgmental words and leave your mind kind of open. Or either in that meditative state, just relate random images coming into you mind and see what they make you think of. Intuition is vision logic while the left brain is reductive and breaks things down to put into math or word formulas, so the conscious mind is very uncreative. To create is to put together, sometime very different things, as everything relates, by analogy anyway. Like life is like surfing, it's not about getting to the beach, it's the ride. They say all thinking is by analogy or comparisons. Definitely listen to that still small voice, it's your muse. Einstein said that "The only real valuable thing is intuition." Oprah said that she always has used her intuition and it lead her into that job. Develop it even if it tells you to go into another field, but do rigorously test what you get from it. It may be something too vague or just your conscious thoughts. lv

Writers block is when you have a hard time than usual coming up with ideas. Most songwriters, poets, authours and other people in those kind of fields have writers block at one time or another (including me). Some writers don't believe in writers block, I personally as a songwriter do. There are times for me when I'm really inspired and have so many rushing through my head at once and others where I'm throwing paper away after I write two lines. There's nothing you can really do about it. It's not really good to stress yourself when you can't come up with ideas though.

i get "writers block" when i paint and write stories. I think that writers block to me is just a way for my brain to tell me that it just wants to rest. it usually happens to me when i'm under a lot of stress, like trying to complete a paper/project on time. I usually combat writer's block by humming and tapping my pen, keyboard or paintbrush (or whatever utensil i'm using). I also doodle to kind of get my brain flowing. sometimes i subconsiously draw something that breaks down that pesky writer's block
