How long will a TV retain charge after being unplugged?

I have an old console TV that I would like to turn into a fish aquarium. I have read that TVs contain parts that retain electrical charge for a long time after being unplugged. How long will these parts be dangerous? If I unplug the TV and turn on the power switch, will that speed up the discharging? Is there any way to ensure that it will not zap me when I start removing parts?

Thanks!

Despite the scaremongering the facts are these When a TV has been switched off for any Length of time any residual charge bleeds away ! if they did not then the said voltages are NOT lethal or even crippling , . The only place to check is where the eht from the eht transformer connects to the bowl of the CRT , it terminates it what looks like a rubber suction cup , okay if you want to be super cautious you can insert a long plastic handle screwdriver tip under the rubber cap and touch the shaft of the driver to the graphite coating of the CRT bowl ! Now a word of comfort --- if you were to stick your finger under the rubber cap you would feel a shock similar to a car spark plug ! you would shout various expletives but definitely not fatal !!!. If the stories were true then no young people would survive an apprentice ship ! .

Now anyone who wants to refute what I have said has clearly never worked in a TV workshop ! ! .

    Cheers Pete
