Can you become lactose intolerant as an adult?

I had horrible stomach cramps yesterday, I couldn't figure out what it was. Then just now, I ate a bowl of cereal and they came back. So I just expelled my stomach contents and now the pain is gone. I'm 22 and never experienced L.T.

Yes, you can become lactose intolerant at anytime during your life, if your body loses the ability to produce the enzyme "lactase" - this enzyme helps break down lactose (a sugar found in dairy products) into glucose + galactose.

    Lactose + [Lactase] ---> Glucose + Galactose

Lactose Intolerance is usually caused by withdrawal from the consumption of dairy products for a prolonged period of time (the body stops producing lactase, because there's no point if there's no lactose around to break down).

However, the stomach cramps and "expelling" of food from your stomach (did you mean throwing up, or diarrhea?) could be caused by something else, such as food poisoning.

Basically, if you hadn't consumed any dairy products for a long time before having that bowl of cereal, then I'd say maybe lactose intolerance... if you HAVE been eating dairy products regularly, I'd say it's more likely to be something else.

    Hope that helps :-)

P.S: interesting little nugget of information... about 2/3rds of the world's population are actually lactose intolerant! This is because only people in certain developed countries consume dairy products after breastfeeding.

Most animals in the natural world are lactose intolerant in adulthood, because it is very uncommon for animals to drink milk after infancy.

A lactose intolerance means that your body is not producing enough enzymes to digest the diary properly. Everyone has a tolerance level and for everyone it changes every once in a while. Have you had a lot of dairy lately? Give your body a rest from dairy for a little while and see if you can introduce it back in, in small quantities to find where your tolerance level is.

If a little gives you problems try a lactose free milk or a milk substitute made of soy or rice.

If it is happening seconds after eating the cereal I must say that would be highly unusual, and might indicate something else.

The dairy would have to make it to your small intestines to start the cramping.

A diary allergy is possible (meaning that your body thinks dairy is an infectious disease and then seeks to eradicate it) It is normal for a food allergy to all the sudden flare up around the mid-20s and would not be that uncommon if you were allergic to something as a child. http://www.webmd.com/allergies/tc/food-allergies-t...

You can become lactose intolerant as an adult. I did, and my husband did, although mine is more severe. His grandfather and my grandmother were both lactose intolerant, and both became so later in life.

You might consider going to rice milk, soy milk (such as silk) or goat's milk. I am not big on rice milk and I am also allergic to soy so I drink goat's milk, eat goat"s milk yogurt and use goat's milk butter. All of the pain has gone away since I switched.

Try cutting it out for a few days. Then have a glass of milk and see what happens!

When you think about it, humans are the only animals that drink milk after we are weaned, and we don't even drink human milk...we drink the milk of another animal!

My dad has. Tips: *most dark chocolate is edible *you CAN eat mayo *eggs are not dairy *sorbet makes a good replacement for ice cream *if there is something that you reeeeeeeally want to eat, but it has dairy, take some lactaid. it will help for the most part *bread does not have milk *you can always have margarine instead of butter *coconut milk has no lactose *there are some things that are specially made lactose free *soy milk can replace milk*You can also have goat/sheep cheese/milk

Technically EVERYONE is lactose intolerant.. it's just that some are less intolerant than others. It appears your tolerance is getting lower. So yes, it's absolutely possible. If you go look at the prevalence of lactose intolerance, it's extremely high... and think about it... Humans are the only mammal on earth that drinks milk after weaning.

The ability to digest lactose deteriorates as you get older. I was LT when I was a baby, but was then fine until I was 20. My family on both sides cursed me with this.

I believe it is possible, yes. Perhaps you have been allergic to milk and are just now discovering it, or maybe you have a newly developed sensitivity.

At any rate, I would avoid milk for now.
