This is a question for all Republicans.....?

For all those Republicans who may answer this, I am curious to know what you think about where your party is at currently and if you think it has lost its way..why or why not? If you do think it has lost its way, would you blame Bush/Cheney for a big part of that? and How do you think your party got to be where it is at now? I am asking honestly as a Independent who grew up with Ronald Regan idea of what is a Republican and I dont see that anymore in your party and why is that?

Update:

I am liking the answers I am getting from everyone, its hard to choose a best answer but i think everyone has a point to their answer, and I truly hope that Republicans find their way again to what they truly are about, and believe in, with the right leader, I would vote republican ..i hope every one of you gets back to the core of republican coservatisim, not this religious right stuff either stick to what you know best, Defense, Economic growth, being all for science and technology, and enviorment...Reganomics all the way! :)

Straying so far from the conservative principles that made us successful is why we lost. The country club Republicans - the moderates aka "Democrat Light" - have destroyed this party. McCain is one of them. Bush is another. When a conservative is on the ticket he/she wins because the majority of Americans, when polled, consider themselves to be conservative.

People need to understand that presidents in the time of war are never popular. Republicans are the ones who were in office at the time of 9/11 so everybody thinks that is some how the republicans fault for the war and our economy thus they want to point the finger. Any President that was in office at this time would of been torn down Democrat or Republican. This will all blow over. Its the uneducated voter that gets this country in to trouble not the president. Obama was elected why? Nobody knows, maybe because he isn't Bush, or maybe because we just wanted to see a black president. Or maybe hes just better for the job. I think this Election was totally twisted on byist voters. Because not once did i hear what Obamas change was.

Republicans are conservatives who like small government and a strong military. Unfortunately there is a lot of liberalism. I think you need a balance leaning more to conservative ideas. Yes, things are a bit off track these days. One major problem was 9/11. All bets were off and we had to do something we never had to do before. President Bush followed his convictions and so we have operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Billions have been spent on these wars and on trying to upgrade security here. Cities and states were given millions for more police, better airport secutiry and everything else you can think of. Were it not for 9/11 it is hard to imagine where we would be today. What could have been is unknown. I do not fault Bush. I admire that he kept his promise to the very end. Many complain but I wonder what may have happened after 9/11 if it had been Gore??? They need to refocus on their core values. Our constitution is a conservative document that the liberals exploit and tarnish.

I think we have lost focus on what we are all about a little but not entirely. They need to get back to making the whole USA strong again instead of certain individual organizations. While the country was on a big upswing in the economy I think we may have gotten a little lax and not looked ahead as much as we should have.Lesson learned, and expect a shining republican light at the end of this 4 year tunnel.

You don't see Ronald Reagan republicans right now because the party has been taken over by so called 'moderate' country club republicans. As soon as true conservatism returns, with an unapologetic conservative leader, the republican party will be back in power. But, that will take some time.

I believe the party has to move to a fiscal conservative party from the social conservative party it has became. Fiscal responsibility went out the window, and if they continue to embrace the social conservative stand point they had better be prepared to lose some more. I do not think most of the people in the upper echelons of the GOP understand why they were rejected. FISCAL IRRESPONSIBILITY! If the party does not adapt the Libertarian Party will be the next major party!

We lost our way when we decided to start spending like democrats. I blame Bush/Cheney for part of it, but certainly not all of it.

Republicans were in power and they didn't fulfill their promise to stop the growth of government. Instead they GREW government and the voters were fed up.

You're right, we need a new Reagan Revolution like we had in 1980. Maybe 2012 will by the new 1980, you know? Let's hope...

I definitely feel the party has strayed from fiscal conservativism and become far to concerned with social conservativism. Here's a great article by Ron Paul to read on the subject of where the Republican party is and where the country is headed.

The only reason that republicans have little part within the government right now is because the country is upset with the way things have been handled within the Bush administration. If it had been Democrats in this situation, then it would be mostly republicans in charge.

No i agree with you on that , i am a young republican myself but they need to reform they have become to caught up in there religious ideals and were entering age but unfortionatly the republicans are still in the past.

I know the republicans are getting a bad rap but the reason i still am is because of there cores values , limited government , more power to the people like our founding fathers wanted it.
