Is It Possible for President Bush to Pardon Himself?

I didn't think this up. I received an e-mail from a group favoring Impeachment and urging folks to take action before Bush left office, lest he pardon himself. I know he hasn't been charged with any indiscretions, but could he in some way pardon himself for offenses not yet charged? Is it possible for a President to pardon himself and his vice president? President Ford pardoned Nixon and I don't think Nixon had been charged with any crimes. So, could this conceivably happen and President Bush announce preemptive pardons?

I believe the common thought is that he would have to pardon Cheney and then resign as President. Once Cheney was sworn in as President a few minutes later, he could pardon Bush. Presumably this would all take place immediately before Obama is sworn in.

Although if Bush is planning some oddball pardoning scheme (and I'm not saying that he is) I wouldn't be surprised if he and his lawyers have come up with some less awkward work-around than what I described above.

There may be some precedent for a non-official temporary transfer of Presidental power to the VP. I seem to recall that while Reagan was unconscious during surgery on his assination attempt wounds, George HW Bush briefly assumed the powers of the Presidency - at least to some extent.

First, Bush and Cheney must be charged/convicted with a criminal offense... So your question is moot from the get-bypass. 2d, I by employing no skill heard any hypothesis approximately Clinton pardoning himself on a similar time as he left place of paintings... and that i exchange into extremely paying activity... i'm now no longer even effective that the variety helps a President to pardon himself.

No, on a couple of counts: Bush hasn't been convicted of anything, and you can't pardon yourself. That would be like being the jury at your own trial.

    No he can't.

And please drop the impeachment...it's only two more months!!!!
