Was anyone surprised by the vote on Prop 8 in california? I was, since they are suppose to be so liberal .?

Update:

I am African American, and I have no dislike of gay people. I think that the reasons they want marriage legalized are ok. They should have same legal rights for decisions of a sick partner or who inherits the money, and who takes care of the children just like hetero sexuual couples have. I dont get the Black people and Mexican people dont like gays comments.

Most African-Americans are democrats, but most of them attend church as well. The increased black vote that turned out to vote for Obama also voted for prop 8. That's how it passed.

Oh, and why is it not ok to hate gay people but it's totally fine to hate mormons? If you want tolerance you must show tolerance (last time I checked, vandalizing mormon churches is not tolerance).

over the previous couple of years i think of there has been a extensive democrat swing from being uncertain approximately gay marriage to helping it. As of purely some years in the past, the politics weren't sturdy. Even human beings like President Clinton, Obama, and particularly some different mainstream democrats weren't precisely waiting to bounce on the pro gay time table wagon. plenty has replaced in some years. Polls have shifted. i think of if prop 8 got here up for a vote in the present day, it might lose. Even Gov. Schwarzenegger did no longer upward push up for prop 8. Prop 8 surpassed with purely fifty two% of the vote, in the present day it could be extra like 60/40 against prop 8.

    Not so surprised…

Religious factions have been proven wrong so many times in the past that it is starting to be ridicules. That is why they should never be part of politics. I bet some of them still refuse to believe that the Earth is a sphere and not the center of the universe. Good thing some people stood up to them and maid some of them see the light.

Personally I could not care less if a woman want to marry another woman or a man want to marry another man. It won’t prevent me from sleeping at night. What business do we have dictating anyone if they can marry or not? Is one of the 10 most sacred commandments about respect?

It may be important for a society to have religions but it should not be at the expense of others. If we stick to the 10 commandments nothing more nothing less; things will start going so much better on this world.

Alot of the Liberals have grown up and gained a little conservatism. More Californians have actually moved to the moderate middle. There are quite alot of Independents in this state. I was more surprised by the fact that Californians fell for the scare tactics and preachings of the church in this matter. I personally am very torn about this issue. I don't want to see anyone's rights trampled on, yet I do not agree with gay and lesbian marriage. I could not cast a vote either way.

Contrary to popular opinion, California is not an overwhelmingly liberal state. There are huge pockets of conservatism.

And to respond to the "it's the fault of the blacks and latinos" meme, the majority of "yes" votes came from senior citizen voters.

Even given that, yes, I was surprised. I think the No on 8 people were outspent and out lied.

Nope not at all we have voted down gay marriage before but the courts overturned our votes!! So prop 8 passes! hey the people of california don't support gay marriage period. 42 of 58 counties passed prop 8!

42 Ca Counties voted yes on 8

16 Ca Counties voted no on 8

It's crystal clear the people have spoken once again and will continue to do so in the future.

Not surprised at all -- the Mormons and the Knights of Columbus sent in a lot of money to support Prop 8. Individual people actually sent in the money, so it was not one big lump sum.

I think it will end up in the Supreme Court and be overturned, which I believe is what should happen.

Yeah, I was. Who would of thought that stupidity would win out?!? I was surprised to hear that the deciding factor was the black vote. More blacks got out and voted because of Obama. Unfortunately 69% of them voted Yes on Prop 8, which helped it win. How could a people that have had to put up with discrimination for so long vote for discrimination against another group?

I wasn't, I dont know how many times we have to vote on this type of prop and reject it over and over again, if the gay community wants to get married then they should move to a state where it is legal but if they dont want to move then they shouldnt complain about how they cant get married in CA
