What kind of whiskey should I ask for?
I'm not a big drinker, but I have enjoyed most all the whiskeys that I've ever had. What kind should I ask for as a nice Christmas gift from my parents? I prefer something smooth, like the trial size of Crown Royal Select I bought over the weekend. Any specifically I should ask for? Thanks!

If you like Crown Royal which is smooth and you want something nice for Xmas and not too expensive you must definitely check out the most famous brands for their price range one is Johnnie Walker(blended scotch which is very smokey) and second Chivas Regal(blended scotch wich is very smooth) but i would say Chivas better for you because you like something smooth you can buy Chivas Regal 12,18,25 yrs depends how much money you got its very nice scotch trust me

there are so many different kinds of whiskey its a very personal choice and it depends on how much you want to spend. Crown Royal is a rye whiskey, its one of the better ones but there is also adam extra stock a very smooth drink, I personally like Park and Tillfords Royal command 8&18 year old blended and it is very affordable. Then you have scotch whiskey a fine single malt ;will certainly win favor with the folks, try for a twelve year old single malt Dalwinney is like angles dancing on your pallet. Then there is irish whisky myPersonall favourite is Bushmills black bush, god I could go on all night about this but try one of the above, you arguaranteeded to win some major point with the old boy.

I find that there are three types of people that approach whiskey, and it would help a lot if you know what type your parents are:
1) People that go for taste - these are people who rate their enjoyment of whiskey based purely on taste.
2) People that go for the 'aesthetic' value - people that seek prosperity, rarity, expensive value, uniqueness, etc... in whiskey, rather than taste.
3) People that go for both taste and aesthetic value.
I'm assuming you are buying scotch or Irish, rather than American, Candian or Japanese (because you spelled it whiskEy)?
For 1) - it entirely comes down to personal taste - if you are after smooth whiskey, you can try Ballantine's Finest or 12yr, Glenfiddich 12 yr. If you think they will like heavier flavors, the Johnnie Walker Green label, Ardbeg, Talisker and Grand Old Parr are hard hitting smokey/woody flavoured whiskies that are very enjoyable in winter. If they like a bit of spice, try the Dewar's white label.
For 2) - its much easier, these people will like a whiskey the more expensive it is. It actually surprises me how many people out there criticize the cheap whiskies, eg...say Red Label is bad, and say Blue is best because its the most expensive - but I bet if today Red was marketed as Johnnie Walker's top whiskey and Blue was the cheapest - these same people will be saying the opposite. Or better still, blindfold them and you will surprise how much they don't know how to taste the difference between whiskies. But anyway, any top and very expensive whiskey that are packaged nicely as collectors items will do - like Blue label or Swing, Chivas Royal Salute etc...
For 3) - for both expensive but good tasting whiskey - Johnnie Walker Gold label (honey aroma, creamy and smooth oak), Dewar's 12yr (strong, rich and fruity), Dimple 15yr (nice oak flavor, not too overpowering), Bushmills 10yr (like many Irish whiskies, smooth and pleasant).
Good luck and hope this helps.

Crown Royal is definitely the best I've had. The regular is smooth even if you don't get the Select. Knob Creek is also pretty good, but it's not quite as smooth, and it's 100 proof vs. Crown's 80 proof. Wild Turkey has put out one called American Honey that is in the liqueur section, it is a little sweet and easy to drink straight. It is not as strong as the others, since it is a liqueur.

I am Canadian, and if you want a truly great rye whiskey, looks for Gibson's Rye Whiskey. Always get the oldest vintage you can find.
I don't even like whiskey, but I can drink this one. I know most people swear by Crown Royal, but Gibson's is better.

Definately Crown Royal.

Ask for Bushmills Single Malt. It's not cheapo, but won't break the bank either and it's very smooth.
If price is no object, you could ask them for 18 year old Glenmorangie Scotch, or Johnnie Walker Gold or something like that.

If they're on a budget Evan Williams (better taste and a bit stronger than Jack Daniels for half the price); if price is not an issue either Buchanan's 12 yr. or Wild Turkey 101
