Does aspirin at any dose thin out the blood, or the lower the better? Is it safer than tylenol, ibuprofen?

I take regular strength aspirins, with the safety coats, and have no problem with them. Do aspirins at any strength thin out the blood, or is it the lower the better, or the higher the better?

Is it better for your system than tylenol, or ibuprofen?

Do tylenol or ibuprofen act as blood thinners too or just aspirin?

If you take cholesterol lowering drugs, and aspirins, ...can this greatly reduce your chances of cardiovascular/circulatory type of problems?

Thanks.

First, Luke, You need to talk to your doctor before taking these medications to thin your blood. There is a lot more involved than just taking different aspirin.

Generally, the more aspirin you take the thinner your blood gets. Because of this some doctors would recommend taking x baby aspirin, and then some drug manufacturers started making lower dose aspirin just for this purpose.

While tylenol (acetaminophen) and ibuprofen can help with managing pain, and reduce fevers, and sometimes swelling, they aren't known for thinning the blood.

BUT if you take too much of the wrong things or combination of drugs, it can cause problems - no matter what drugs. Check with your pharmacist and let them know what over-the-counter medication you are taking. They can work with your doctor to make sure you don't take medications that cancel each other out, or cause problems together.

All pain medication, whether over-the-counter or prescription, will can blood thinning to a degree. Aspirin has an extra ingredient in it that causes anti-clotting...thus the reason so many cardiologist recommend a baby aspirin for heart patients...not normally full-strength aspirin.

Ibuprofen and Tylenol would probably be better if you're looking for pain relief. But, if you're concerned about heart health then you really need to be followed by a doctor. Self-medicating can cause greater or different problems that might never appeared otherwise.

No matter what you take, when you take pain medication it's always good to eat with them. Having food in your system allows the medication and the acid in your tummy something to eat on, instead of just the medication.

Added: I just looked up on Wikipedia Aspirin...it says there that persons under 19 should not take aspirin due to side effects of Reyes Syndrome. I don't know how old you are, but if you're under 19 you might be real careful about that.

It is effective. Remember, you don't have to poison off ALL the platelets to prevent heart attacks or occlusion strokes. That would leave the person susceptible to uncontrolled bleeding. Instead, all you need to do is reduce the risk of clotting by a small margin, and that translates out to greatly reduced risk of blood clots. It is estimated that taking one 81mg aspirin tablet per day reduces the chances of heart attack by 10-15%. And that's a significant amount that translates out to thousands of heart attacks prevented over a year's time. Yet, those people will still clot normally if they get a cut, or are in an accident, which you definitely want to preserve.
