Is extreme hunger a symptom of diabetes?

My fasting blood sugar was high last month - 117. I have been told I have pre-diabetes. I am overweight and find it impossible to lose weight.

When it turned cold recently, I experienced intense hunger, even tho I was eating a normal amount of food.

I have no other symptoms - not extremely thirsty, for instance. I am going for a checkup the day after Thanksgiving (!) but just wanted to know now.

Polydipsia, polyuria, and polyphagia are signs of high blood sugar levels. They basically translate to: Drinks a lot (usually water), pees a lot, and eats a lot.

In diabetics, there is a problem that involves insulin. Either enough isn't made, or cells become resistant to it. Insulin is needed to move glucose (sugar) into the cells. If the sugar can't get into the cells, they begin to starve. This sends off a chemical cascade in the body that causes a person to feel extremely hungry, a feeling which usually lasts until the sugar can get into the cells.

So, yes, extreme hunger can be a sign of diabetes. But be careful about assuming that it's diabetes that's causing it... There could be dozens of other reasons.

was that a random finger prick? if so it was a snapshot of the moment, not an indication of diabetes.

Cold weather usually signals that we need more food to keep up the fat content in our bods. Weird!! Especially when we are trying to loose it.

You might try very low carb food plan for weight loss! And walking a lot! It really does help the inches vanish. But do be aware that if you start to lose weight too fast to get to the doctors office. Usually about a pound or 2 per week is a good way to do it.

Thanksgiving and the Christmas Holiday are very hard to diet or do serious food planning on. I have the meats, the green salads and veggies, and go very easy like a small spoonful of every thing else.

Good luck! We really do not want to welcome you to our little club.

yes, but with weakness. When you are in extreme hunger, usually diabetes patient get tier very much. But if you feel only hungry, then its not the symptom of diabetes.

And as you are a pre-diabetic so you better to control your diet before its too late, and have some regular exercise.

No, extreme hunger is not a symptom of diabetes. Has your doctor tested your thyroid levels?

It CAN be, but the BS test is the real indicator. 117 fasting is really not that high, but diet and exercise can help it get lower.

Following the diabetic diet will help...IF you are committed to it.
