How smart is my husky-lab mix? Labrador retrievers are supposedly number 7 in the top 10 smartest dogs.?

But I have also read that huskys are very intelligent. Mine had no problem with house breaking/ potty training and has mastered a barrage of the usual commands, sit, stay, fetch, lay down, sit pretty and play dead. but with perseverance and patients anyone can train a dog. I pretty much just want bragging rights but why isn't a husky listed as a more than average intelligent dog?

Update:

All your answers were great livin life, im still laughing thank you.

According to the same study that claims Labs as No. 7, Huskies rate in at No. 45.

    http://petrix.com/dogint/40-54.html

It's difficult to judge a dog on his intelligence, though. Is it their willingness to perform? How quickly they pick up a new command? Is it how easily they can manipulate you? What is it? From what I can tell, most people consider it how well they perform for you. I don't see how that makes sense, because extremely intelligent dogs can sort of decide that it isn't worth it to perform unless you offer something good enough, not just a pat on the head.

I'd say Huskies are rated so "low" because they're independent and willful. Thus, they're generally not going to bend over backwards to please you, and it's the dogs that want to please and perform (like Labs and Poodles) that are considered "intelligent."

Braille you might not get too many responses on this one..you used some pretty big words for some of these y!/a users.

They might actually have to do some of their own research for a change and consult a dictionary.

Labrador retrievers are just more of a popular breed than a husky, simply put. That is not undermining the intelligence of any other breed, it's just highlighting the stupidity of humans to only showcase the top 10 smartest dogs. Humans and dogs have something in common some are very intelligent and others just don't cut it.

Crate training style litter box training is probably one of the most effective way to litter box train a dog.

    Learn here https://tr.im/8mL4l

Traditional crate training involves putting a dog in a kennel when you cannot watch it. The concept is fairly simple to which no animal will soil the area to which it eats and sleeps.

The crate style method for litter box training is similar, except eventually, the dog will have more freedom, even while you're away from the house.

Before you start crate style training, you should already have the dog comfortable with the litter box. The dog should also know that he is expected to use "his area" for the bathroom.

When litter box training using this methos, you aren't using an actual crate but a small "crate area." You can create an area that has just enough room for the dog, his bed, food/water bowl, and litter box. The basic concepts of the size of the crate still applies, to which the dog must have just enough room to sit, lay down, stand, and turn around, except there must also be enough room for the litter box.

The cage should be sturdy, as should the crated area, if you chose not to use a crate. In the later case, choose a material that the dog cannot jump over or hurt himself trying to escape from. A dog gate works well.

If using a puppy pen or cage, be sure to fill any open space with some other safe material that will prevent the dog from using open space in the pen or cage as a bathroom area.

Once you have constructed your "crate area", place the dog in this "crate" at typical bathroom times. The dog should stay in this crate area until he uses the bathroom.

Try to be nearby so you can catch the dog in the act and praise him right after he uses the box.

The crate area should also be the where the dog stays when you leave the house or cannot watch him.

When you are with the dog in the house, the crate area should be left open, and part of his "direct path" to his bathroom area.

If the dog uses the bed as his bathroom spot, wash the bed and sprinkle food and treats on the bedding. Because the dog will not use it as his bathroom area if there is food on it.

The crate training routine should continue until you see the dog use the litter box on his own.

You should try stay in the room with the dog at times when you know he needs to go.

By leaving the crate area, it will encourage him to use the litter box, repeating with the cue frequently, and praise him whenever he uses the box.

Soon, you'll be walk with the dog into the room, use the cue, and the dog will go to the litter box to do his business.

If you want bragging rights just keep training your dog. Statistics mean very little if you have a poorly behaved dog. I'm a Canadian living in Ontario and here it is believed that only Labradors and Poodles are capable of being service dogs. Such as seeing eye dogs, hearing dogs, etcc.... My Service Dog is a Leonberger / King Shepherd Cross, and is extremely intelligent, but then he has been trained with disobedient intelligence. That basically means he knows how to think for him self and problem solve or make decisions when required.

Source(s): Service Dog, Taser, Intelligent Disobedience Training allows a dog to disobey a command when it is in the best intrest or safety of the handler. The dog problem solves for particular situations.

    Labrador Smart

Good question and great job with the training, Kudos to you!

Husky's are very independent and with some of the standard testing they may not come out high up as they don't see the benefit for them. They are not so attuned to please the owner as Labs or say my Corgi, who will do anything for a little treat.

For you to have taught your dog so much you are streets ahead of most people who think if the dog responds to it's name they have done well.

So take those bragging rights and parade them around, you have done and exceptional job!

    Who says Huskys aren't smart?

    They're geniuses!

They don't jump fences, they learn how to unlock them! LOL!

    If a Lab is a 7 out of 10, then a Husky is 11+

    These dogs are amazingly intellegent.

Friends of mine have 2 fence jumping Huskies.

My friends dug a 3 foot deep trench around their property, back filled it with cement, then put up a 12 foot fence with a special lock.

The dogs still get out of the yard so much, all the local vets, law enforcement, and shelters know them. On sight. By name!

    LOL!

My friends still can't figure out how on earth they get out. The next step is setting up nanny cams to see where they're defeating the fence.

You can't even guess when you are talking a mix.. They don't necessarily maintain their breed specific traits. Might be a dumb dog that runs away all the time. You can only figure that out yourself. Bragging rights ? You can only get those by training our dog.. Puppies can sit stay etc..
