Is it true that if GM gets this big bailout, people are going to boycott their cars?

I was speaking to someone at work, who told me that if the government bails out GM, she will NEVER buy another american made car...She feels that the united states is bailing out these dreadful unions, and not the companies themselves...after all, the unions broiught down the companies with their insane demands...

I thought she was crazy until i over heard more people saying the very same thing!

So what do ya'll think? will you stop buying american cars if this bailout goes through?

Update:

JOSHUA- They dont make 28 dollars! thats the problem! orers are making 70 dollars an hour and benefits, which is more than me, who has a masters!

Update 2:

I really don't have much of an opinion on this, and i'm not planning on getting a new car anytime soon anyways, so im not losing sleep over this, i was just curious to know what you all think about this

The GM propaganda here is beyond belief. They used to start at $28 hr. but the last contract gave them so many concessions that now they start at $14 hr. Who hears about the Honda/Toyota/Hyundai problems withe the same pay/workers/conditions, who are building more plants in America, while GM will use the bailout to build an SUV plant in Russia. That's a clue. GM cries about unions and gets money, the foreign companies don't and sell cars. I have a 20 y/o Mazda. Imagine how many Chevys it would have taken to reach 20 yrs.

Yeah, 'cause that makes a whole lot of sense. Give them all kinds of money, and then make sure they lose it so they can't pay it back.

And we aren't bailing out the unions, and in fact they are one of the major reasons our economy did so well in the past. People cannot buy products made by our economy if they cannot afford those products.

And unions have always been the reason we get paid what we are worth now. Our economy has nearly collapsed on more than a number of occasions in its early history, and its because businesses kept refusing to pay their employees any kind of living wage. So the employees, who are also consumers, couldn't buy any products and the economy would come close to collapse.

And it was the unions who saved us every time. It surprises me to no end how stupid people are, and are so willing to try to destroy the one thing that has constantly saved our *sses.

Its not the workers who are the problem, its the businesses.

    I wouldn't.

I'll never boycott an American company that pays Americans a decent wage, for such nonsense.

yes if you assume their entire health care benefit package as income, as if they recieved the entire amount in a year's time, and their employee auto discount as if they were buying a new car every year.... and maybe they might get close around retirement age after working for the big 3 for 50 years.

Nobody makes $70 an hour straight time for putting cars together.

Even experienced union machinists don't make that much. You are delusional.

Union Master Mechanics don't make that much.

Apparently, the boycott is already in effect and has been for some time - otherwise, GM wouldn't need a bailout.

As far as boycotting them if WE bail them out with OUR money - that would make no sense what so ever.

People say that, but they usually don't make buying decisions that way.

As far as the unions go, management agreed to a contract. I'm not sure why that is the union's fault. The Big Three essentially bribed the unions in order to achieve lasting labor peace, and it is costing them now. But that is hardly the only reason why American automakers are struggling.

Don't know but a boycott is irrelevant if you can't get a loan to buy a car. That has been the problem lately.

Also, is she going to stop banking because the financial industry got a bailout?

Yes, its just a bailout for the unions and their over payed members. I for one refuse to buy another big three car until they either get rid of the corrupt unions or they renegotiate for pay rates that are realistic and benefits for working members only.

Note - The guy that sweeps the floors at those plants makes $28 an hour! You union reps need to stop posting BS!

Grob - Not all banks needed a bailout. In fact most of them didn't

I would stop voting for the people in the government who are actually borrowing money they don't have and increasing our national debt . in fact they should be immediately kicked out of office.

The auto companies should go straight to the oil companies and borrow the 25 billion from them. After all their interests are the same aren't they.

The government wants to get involved to gain control and nationalize another industry....and they're willing to rob us to do it.

    Wake up America.

They don't need to boycott them; no one's buying these crappy cars in the first place.

I'm buying Japanese or German to the end. Sorry all you "Buy American", "Don't buy cars from countries that hate us" chanting losers. . . But I don't have the nerve or time in my day to have to take my American made Ford to the dealership for repairs every 3 weeks. And once the warranty's up, I'm left with a car that's junkyard ready.

    You are an idiot...

Nobody has said anything about a "bailout". The executives are asking for a loan. Do you know the difference between a bailout and a loan?

Furthermore, why aren't you screaming about taxpayers subsidizing the huge golden parachutes we are underwriting for executives, while they hemorrhage thousands of workers!? Why do you love bankers but hate working Americans.
