What does the word "believe" mean to you?

I'm curious. It applies to the concept of tolerance of others' belief systems and "inflicting" your beliefs on others.

Update:

I know what the dictionary definition is and I know what my definition is. that's why I get confused by some of the responses on R&S.

There is no " believe in me" if the person who asks you to, does not act on what he/she is preaching. It is not very wise to "believe" in something that has not revealed itself to you as true!

Why do people that know about perls " bite on the perl" first??

When Jesus said' Walk by faith and not by sight" ... You can try God as much as you want .... He will NEVER let you down! You can try a person as much as you want ..... 9 out of 10 will let you down when the going gets tough. Peter forsought Jesus three times ... and he was a Saint. ... Well, my point. The only source we can blindly believe in is in the Gospels ... the rest. ... You can choose to believe in something... but it depends how strongly developed your "collision warning systems works". If something doesn't give you peace of heart inside ... most likely that the word "believe" is to be supstituted by the word "pray for revelation"

To me it signifies what I think to be the truth. It signifies something that I will stand by and defend, something I will follow.

I believe in that which can be proven to exist, I believe in that which can be shown to be reliable, and not coincidental.

However, I understand that because my belief hinges on the evidence, I can and will alter my belief to encompass new evidence, so long as that evidence isn't coincidental either.

Nor will I force my belief onto others, however, if they make a statement which is blatantly false, or based on a faulty presumption, or if they merely make a claim (of a nature dealing with facts) without evidence, I will correct them.

I do nothing when they are kind and realistic enough to state their beliefs as opinion. I understand that my beliefs are opinion, but I feel the need to justify my stance with facts, those beliefs which are not justified by facts, do not deserve consideration, in my opinion.

Spiritual, emotional, physical, and/or social weakness. The system of 'belief' is based on a lack of understanding or knowledge.

Belief to me is Existence. Without belief their is no existence. Your belief is what you believe in. In other words Believe is be alive. e.g. If you don't believe in food you would not be eating it and inversely if you believe that food is a poison you will never eat it, and if you believe food is edible you will always eat it. The level of belief may vary but belief is always there, even those who say they do not believe in God do believe in God and that is why they say they do not believe in God.The only thing is they are not aware of their belief. Like a lover is not aware of his love and say he/she hates the other.
