Retired Marine, practicing Catholic, married 21 years (and counting) to the best woman I ever met, blessed with two teenagers I couldn't be more proud of. Lived 6 years with the family in Santa Cruz, Bolivia... a well worthwhile experience. Now working in the Middle East. I miss my family incredibly and I miss working with the Church.
If you favor legalizing gay marriage, do you also favor legalizing polygamous marriage?
One of the arguments against gay marriage is the slippery slope argument. Is it a valid argument?
15 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoHow complete are the Dead Sea scrolls?
What books do they contain? Which ones are missing? New Testament? Old Testament? Apocryphal?
6 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIf not by creation, how did life come to be?
I'm not looking for for cosmological origins of the planets or evolutionary processes. My question is:
Given an early earth-like planet at a favorable distance from a suitable star and with a proper mix of basic elements, how does the first single celled organism form (bacteria don't count; they require a host).
17 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIs Ramadan the month for attacking Christian views on Yahoo R&S?
Is it just me or are there an unusually high number of questions from Muslims attacking Christianity today? Most seem to be including some very poor biblical interpretation. Or is it just me?
10 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoHow did Jesus get His vast scriptural knowledge?
Was He born with the knowledge of the word of God? Did it come to Him through observation? Did He have a photographic memory when He read scripture? Did He just study a lot in the synagogue when He had free time from His work?
7 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhat was Jesus' favorite book of the Bible?
I know that it's anachronistic to use the term "Bible". Still which scroll or book do you think most influenced Him / touched Him? Which did He read most or refer to or quote most often?
8 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhich translation of the Bible did Jesus read?
Again, I know that the term "Bible" is used out of time here. Still, there was at least one translation of the Jewish scriptures at the time. Do you think He most often read in Hebrew or in Greek? Were the Jewish translations simply copies of the original old language or were the sometimes updated to modern language. (I would guess that there would be a difference in language at least as great as Old English to modern English, i.e. the KJV vs. the NIV.)
6 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoHow do you interpret the story of Jephthah (Judges chapter 11)?
You really need to read quite a bit before and after to get the context. The topic of Jephthah came up as a tangent to another poster's question. As a result, I'm working on a bit of a study for myself and am interested in different studied views.

7 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhat do you say to someone who will probably lose their baby?
My friend asked for advise. He has a close friend whose wife is pregnant with their child. The doctors told them that she will probably lose the child. My friend asked during a prayer meeting what he could say to help; what scripture might bring comfort. The family concerned is Jewish, so that would limit it to the Old Testament. My first thoughts were Job and King David's loss of his first child by Bathsheba, but neither of those is particularly comforting. Of course he would tell them (if the child does not make it) that the child is with the Lord. He's concerned for their marriage and for their faith in the Lord. Of course, please pray that none of this is necessary and that the Lord let them keep the child.
7 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhere to find a decent paying overseas job - native Spanish fluent English?
My company had to let go an excellent employee because the customer found out he had a felony conviction 16 years ago that we were unaware of. He has worked for us for five years and steadily/rapidly moved up with no reason to ever believe he had this issue. He now is permanently denied a visa to the US. I personally wish we could keep him but the customer made it clear that that is not an option. I'd like to help him out. Any ideas about where to begin looking? He lives in South America, specialized in Petroleum, Oil Lubricants delivery (supervisor - trained to US Army standards) and vehicle / equipment repair / support. I know this is a long shot but any assistance would be appreciated.
1 AnswerOther - Careers & Employment1 decade agoWhat does the word "believe" mean to you?
I'm curious. It applies to the concept of tolerance of others' belief systems and "inflicting" your beliefs on others.
15 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhat are the rules for flight over clouds?
Refresh me please. I'm aware of cloud clearance requirements based on airspace type and I'm aware of the IFR clearance called VFR-ON-TOP. I saw an Army study guide online though that mentioned "Over-the-top flights (VFR) may not exceed 30 minutes duration unless the aircraft and crew are fully IFR legal and equipped." Is that peculiar to the military, or is there an Federal Aviation Regulation reference? thanks

I'm applying for a new position. the job application is asking me for my pay history at each of my previous jobs. Is that appropriate? Obviously it will be used to limit their offer.

My daughter wants to visit us in Bolivia. Bolivia now requires US citizens to get a visa. I downloaded the process for obtaining the visa but did not figure out which Government of Bolivia consulate or embassy to deal with. I'm going to look again, but if anyone has the answer at their fingertips... She lives in Jacksonville NC and will be traveling from Raleigh Durham Airport in NC. thanks
6 AnswersEmbassies & Consulates1 decade agoWhat O.T. passage emphasizes team? Or what O.T. passages emphasizes the family meal?
We have a team meeting tonight where the theme is exactly that; Spirituality and the team meeting. Our meeting always includes a shared meal, so Jesus sharing the last supper with his disciples is a good New Testament passage. I'm wondering if there is a good Old Testament passage that would reinforce this. A psalm wouldn't hurt either ;-)
1 AnswerReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoHow do Jehovah's Witnesses respond to John 20:28 where Thomas reacts to the risen Christ?
According to all translations that I have access to, when "doubting Thomas" is confronted by the risen Christ, he responds with the words. "My Lord and my God". There are good arguments from scripture for and against Jesus as the second person of the Trinity, but this appears to be a clear testimony to the divine nature of Christ.
