Why are you always late to work?
It's bad enough being late in your 20's, but your 40's? If you know that being late day after day can cost you your job, why aren't you making sure you show up ten minutes early every day like clockwork?
Psychologists are welcome to weigh in here. I'm trying to understand why a lifelong friend just can't seem to kick the tardiness habit. She's already lost jobs due to this, and no kind of suggestion will do any good. Any insight anyone?
Thanks, people. My friend is 44, no college, no computer skills and is lucky to have this job. She's late with everything else too, including paying her bills. It's a sickness with her for almost 30 years, but she won't get the help she needs. If she loses this job she's in big trouble, but like some of you said, I think she resents the job because she doesn't like it, and she has control issues with all authority because of her mother. I wish somebody could get through to her!! I'm surprised she hasn't gotten a warning yet, but maybe she'll just be let go.

I am usually always 5-10 minutes late to work...the reason is that I hate my job...but I always end up working anywhere from 10-30 minutes past when I'm supposed to be off so it evens out.
Plus it's just the owners and I...and they don't care. There is no position I can move up to in this company anyways being that it is just the owners and I.

The next day I'm late will be the first, and by on time, I mean 10 minutes early (so if I "start" at 7am, that means I'm here at 6:50).
Your friend is going to lose their job, and in this economy, not so easy finding a new one.

My father is continually late for everything. Appointments, meetings, you name it! He even runs his own business.. and he has been late for everything, pretty much my entire life, and he is in his 60s now.
I think it has something to do with the brain, how some people cannot shut things off sometimes and move onto the next task.. he knows he is running late, but he thinks of other things he has to get done before moving on to a meeting...

I am never late as I get there 30 minutes early.
Being late is not acceptable in most businesses and you could be fired if it becomes a habit.

Simple, it is a sense of entitlement one that is above all others, showing people "look I can walk in anytime I feel like" makes her feel noticed and entitled. She is never going to change no matter what ya do. You can suggest she change the clocks in the house but again it is her mind that is messing with her.

I've heard it's a control issue. You aren't bound by the rules other people follow, you make them yourself. It is so annoying when people are constantly late. Those of us that are on time suffer.

Well, Im consistently "fashionably late"
1-2-3 minutes after.
Why ? I dont want to go
Ive been there 13.5 yrs and I need the last minute push of fear ( of losing my job) to get me even to go.

Do you suppose she stays up until 4:30 a.m. ? Probably depressed and feels frightened about going to work.
