So my friend's personal info was stolen.. but the thief might not know it.?

It was about a week ago, after working out, she went back to her car, and found her back window smashed in. Her winter coat was missing, but her sister in law's purse was not touched. Later inventory showed that her paperwork from her job was also missing, it was in a bag that was taken. Included were her application, which has her address, social security, and all that.

She has already called credit bureaus (however the heck you spell it..)

But I pointed out that the guy could easily keep her social and address and use it a year or so from now.

The long and short of my question is, 'what can she do?'

She can put a freeze on all three credit bureaus. This will prevent anyone from accessing her credit file to apply for credit.

When she wants to get credit, or a mortgage etc. She will need to contact the credit bureau from which the credit file will be pulled by the lender, and have that file unfrozen.

It's that simple. It's a pretty easy thing to do to protect yourself and it only costs 10.00 per bureau (30.00)

    Transunion: 1-877-322-8228

    Experian: 1- 888 397 3742

    Equifax : 1-800-685-1111

If she put it on fraud alert, then that's half the battle. It also has to be renewed every 90 days to keep it active. If that was not done, let her contact Trans Union Fraud Dept. Their toll free # 1-877-322-8228.They will notify the other 2 bureaus.
