I came home from work today to find a large chunk out of the side of my large frontosa's face. ?

We have a 220 gallon tank with cichlids. They have grown up together and we have had no problems. One of the larger fish, a frontosa must have been injured by another fish. There is a large chunk out of his face with a flap hanging from it. I am not sure what to do. He is acting fine but I want to help it heal. My husband usually does the fish stuff but he is in Kuwait so I can't even call him. I added a little aquarium salt. Is there anything else I should do? I would remove the fish who did it but I am not sure which one it was. I would appreciate any suggestions!

Update:

I think the culprit may be a male yellow blaze. We do have an extra tank set up that I can put it in to medicate, the trick is catching a fish in a 220 gallon tank!

I know we have antibiotics here but I think they are for other things. I'll ask what the fish store recommends.

Do you ever feed the fish live food? Live food teaches aggression. Or do you have mating pairs of fish in the tank? If some of the fish are mating that could be the cause of the aggression and territorial nature. You might also try shocking the fish by rearranging the tank. That sometimes helps keep my fish from fighting. They become more worried about finding a new territory than with fighting or picking on one fish. It might also be that your Frontosa has something wrong with it and the other fish are trying to drive it away. Salt and stress coat are very good. Lanab has a good point about medication. Treating a 220 gal tank is expensive and could mess with the chemistry and other fish. By the way, if you take the fish out and put it in a hospital tank, don't forget to rearrange the tank before putting the Frontosa back in.

Most important is to keep the water conditions as good as possible so that the fish doesn't get a secondary infection.

I wouldn't treat with anything unless you actually get an infection. A little salt will do no harm, but actual anti-biotics can affect the tanks cycle and therefore harm the rest of the fish.

If you do need to treat a fungal infection consider using a dip method where you take the fish out and just put it in a tub of medicated water for a few minutes. That way it doesn't affect the rest of the tank and fish.

But if you can keep the fish generally healthy it should be able to heal itself.

Isolate the fish and give it some antibacterial medication or use stress coat with aloe vera this helps heal the fish's wounds or torn fins. Isolate the fish until the wound is gone and keep a close eye on the other fish to find out who attacked the injured fish.

what other fish are in the tank? maybe we can work out who the culprit is likely to be.

if you can isolate the injured fish in another tank, I would recommend this and then treat with an anti-bacterial medication to stop the injury becoming infected. if you do see the injury getting worse, it does sound a little severe, it may be kinder to put the fish to sleep.
