Are most Thanksgiving turkeys female?

According to an episode of American Eats on History Channel, most of the turkeys consumed on Thanksgiving are female (hens). Can this be true? Don't they need some of the hens to lay eggs, and make more turkeys? Shouldn't this mean that most of the turkeys used for consumption are male (toms)?

I've heard males because they have bigger chests than the females. And most people like the white meat. (I prefer the dark meat. It's more tender to me) I think it has more to do with age as far as tenderness. Some years, you may be getting an older turkey than other years. The younger ones are supposed to be more tender.
