Why do christian fundies get offended by the idea that Homo Sapiens have evolved from an early ape ?

Yet have no problem with the idea of being evolved from "the dust of the ground".

Update:

Sorry I should've said a common ancestor of contemporary apes, but you get my gist.

Update 2:

Mark E : Congratulations on being able to review ALL of the fossil records. With your knowledge from this endeavour, of course you are welcome to criticise current scientific thinking - although probably better to write a full paper (with all sources) rather than a facetious comment on Yahoo Answers.

Update 3:

Mark E : The existence of a process, does not prove the existence of a god !!! Random changes occur, the acceptance of the changes is less random (if the change negatively affects a creature, it's less likely to pass this change on). I think the area we agree on is that there are many gaps in our current knowledge (many less than a century ago) - where we disagree is that I don't see the gaps to be god shaped.

That does not offend anyone, We just dismiss it as silly. And when a person dies, what happens to his body? It turns to dust.It doesn't turn into an ape.

And God formed man out of the dirt of the earth. He didn't evolve anything. He got it right the first time. And isn't it something that our bodies are the same percentage of material as that is on the planet. 70% water on the earth, 70% in our bodies. And our bodies work best as we feed them substance that are grown out of the dirt of the earth, just as God intended the dirt body to do.

Apes and homo sapiens shared a common ancestor. Life came from somewhere and "dust of the ground" was certainly part of whatever primordial soup produced it.

Where a lot of people have problems is with the sudden and complete appearance of modern man. There just is no smooth transition from a pre- history writing, trading, producing man prior to the appearance in the middle east and spreading outward from there. That's a social thing and for man to suddenly appear with all our faults, bickering, wars, trade, commerce, and intelligence at one point of time is problematic for a couple of reasons: but mainly that we don't have reliable records that provide any transitory record, everything is based upon some religious fable, whether it is a garden of Eden story of some goddess arising from the waters of the Nile.

DNA, empirical science provides the biological history, but not this social one. And that is a problem that science cannot answer and neither can we, no matter what we may want to believe.

Mike: Your principles appear reasonable at first glance but you do not seem to have an understanding of what evolution and science are. The theory of evolution is supported by evidence. The idea that humans were made in their present form out of dust is not a part of science or the scientific method - and it does not have evidence.

No scientist considers evolution a matter of simple chance or randomness. Natural selection is the opposite of random.

It might be helpful to read a primer on evolutionary theory before rejecting it over a "straw man:"

Edit: I see continual misrepresentations of evolutionary theory. It does not contend that humans "came from monkeys" or "chance." The fact that creationists do not understand the mechanisms of evolution is a major red flag.

I personally don't care if they're offended. Evolution is accepted science. It has been for longer than I've been alive. It has not been disproved in over 150 years.

What is odd is that no one claims evolution disproves god. It doesn't, yet you can't count the fundies that will believe any tidbit of pseudoscience that comes along, and then go from pillar to post pretending they understand it.

I have little knowledge of science, I don't pretend to know one fossil from another, but I know if anyone disproves evolution it will hit all the papers. I don't propose to change my mind until then.

I don't get "offended". This is an unscientific word. I like to weigh the evidence and so far I have not seen any evidence that convinces me that this has occurred. (And yes I have reviewed all the fossil evidence). Are you suggesting that I should accept the theory without any assessment? Don't we have the right to criticize the theory?

Christians who hold to creationism don't believe humans evolved from the dust of the ground. Christians believe God created humans perfectly formed.

Also there are many many people who are not fundies who do not believe in evolution including many scientists.

Tardis girl: Your reasoning is flawed but popular. The reason that the evolutionists fight like mad to keep Intelligent Design out of schools is because it makes the most sense and has the most evidence in support. The evolutionist is happy to incorporate a "big bang" with no cause or scientific explanation in their dogma but not to consider that there might be a cause which provides a more rational explanation.

edit. I love the way evolutionists now couch the wording of their theory in words like "mechanism" like there is some principle at work. Evolution can be nothing more than random and accidental. Anything else admits something larger at work...yes...God (lol)

I too would rather have evolved from a tool using ape, than be formed out of dirt or clay.

Christians are offended because they don't understand Science and the connection of all life.

I must be in a really twisted mood tonite -cause the only answer I could think of is that it's proof that people'll believe in anything if men in pointy hats tell them..

Only I can't find a non-confrontational way to say it.

Their biggest fear is losing everlasting life so they are very upset by anything that threatens their beliefs. In their minds evolution is in direct conflict with their creation beliefs so they are more than offended, they are threatened.

Tooniron, I don't get offended , I reject it based on the lack of evidence to support it. As for being evolved from the dust of the ground. No the bible doesn't say we were evolved from the dust of the ground but rather that God made us from the dust of the ground. Think about it. When you look at what evolution is in it's entirety . Is being made from the dust of the ground really that ridiculous in comparison to that ? Time + matter + chance to produce all we see ? I would say that's much more ridiculous.

Kind of the same reason we get pissed off when they say that we were brought forth from the dust of the ground.

Well, then there's also the idea that evolution essentially invalidates a literal interpretation of their holy book.
