Does this make me a 'bad atheist'?

I have absolutely no wish in "deconverting" a theist. I like pointing out the things that make no sense to me in their religion, but I don't have any wish for them to "join me", so to speak, in my atheism.

However, a lot of atheists do seem intent on deconverting theists, as in this news story of an atheistic group setting up a placard at a holiday display. I can't guarantee the accuracy of the story, but it was done by a regional news station (not FOX) so...

Again, though, is it "bad atheism" to not want to deconvert theists? Especially not the theists who believe their faith/religion's rules is/are the only thing keeping them from hurting others?

Update:

I was kinda referring to the comments below the article...well, the most recent accuses atheism of being a religion and then rambles on about Jesus, but there are slightly more sane replies accusing the atheist group of what they accuse Christians of doing. :/

I believe that news story concerned a local display here in Washington state's capitol. It's a controversy that's been going on for a couple of years now, and it's definitely making people think.

The placard by the atheistic group denounces God, heaven, hell, and a whole lot of "beliefs" by Christians and other religions. I don't believe they put it up to deconvert anyone.

I think the local government allowed a Jewish group to place a menorah, then a Christian group wanted to add a tree, then the atheists wanted equal time. Next, the Satanists will want to put up a display, as well as every cult in America.

I don't believe any of this should be displayed at the state capitol, as it erases the line between church and state, without which we would be like the middle east.

I have no wish to actively militantly deconvert theists.

Atheism is only a lack of belief in gods, nothing else. We have no creed, dogmas, or requirements.

I like the public display of atheism, actually. While a bit blunt and perhaps insensitive, I agree with the core statement, and more importantly, I like how atheism is now more in the public light than in hiding.

I watched it on the news today from CNN, and it was done by an atheist group based in Minnesota (IIRC). It was in Washington at the state capitol building, and they got permission from the government to set up the display as it was deemed the display followed all the rules in order to be placed publicly in the capitol building next to the nativity scene, tree, and menorah.

EDIT: Though, ideally, either all or no religions should be displayed in a government building...

    EDIT: Wisconsin.

I don't deconvert theists. Actually I encourage SOME, because I know they need that belief to be a better person (sad but true).. As long as they are happy & aren't affecting me, they can believe in flying bunnies for all I acre

It gets tiring when theists misquote the Bible and you hear them spout bs all day long

When I get angry and respond in a 'converting' way, it's usually an angry and/or tired response to what else is going on in my life.

I especially wish they'd read the Bible and quit believing that nonsense when they pass laws/rules like Proposition 8. Theistic belief leads to incredibly contradictory and unacceptable behavior.

I guess I would like to 'deconvert' them. After that, I really don't care if they become a Hellenistic pagan, Buddhist, Wiccan, Druid, etc.

Their cherry-picked, inhumane beliefs really get to me at times.

I wasn't aware there was a "good atheism" and "bad atheism". Being an atheist is pretty much a binary state, either you believe in some sort of god or you don't. So if you don't, you're an atheist - you don't have to do anything else, and it seems pretty silly to posit some sort of rating system based presumably on your dedication to the proposition that there is no god, I mean, faith is for religion, I don't have faith there is no god, I just lack any evidence or good reason to believe in one, being dogmatic about it is silly.

  • No, you aren't a "bad" atheist.

I'm not interesting in twisting anybody's arm either but I am interested in communicating my approach to religious questions. Only if I smash my ideas against someone else's wall will I see if those ideas stand firm or shatter. I enjoy sharing my experiences and thoughts with almost everyone on here and I hope that I'll say something that is useful to someone. Likewise, I look for answers that are meaningful to me. That's just part of honest dialogue.

As for atheist displays, what's wrong with communicating our message through public media? Don't we have the same free speech rights as any other group? As long as we aren't inciting a riot or encouraging illegal activity, it should be ok.
