Will an external hard drive help my desktop be faster?

I have a dell desktop computer. It has 1GB RAM and 40GB hard drive. If I were to get an external hard drive to put all my pics and music, etc. on would it help make it faster, or do I need more RAM? It runs slower now that when I first got it. I found a great deal on an external hard drive with 500GB memory. Thanks for any help... :0)

Update:

I did run defrag on it a few weeks ago. Do you have to take it apart to add RAM?

It will only make it faster if the current drive is nearing capacity and you offload the media onto the external drive.

Adding RAM is a really good way to increase speed and it's actually really cheap right now to do so.

You should also run defrag on your hard drive to optimize the performance.

In no way will an external hardrive help, if anything it will make it slower as they travel through usb 2.0 which is slower then SATA (internal hardrive). I would recomend more RAM.
