How do I keep naughty kitties from chewing Christmas lights?

We have a prelit tree and they bit some wires in half. We can fix it. But I am worried they will do it when the lights are on. I know which kitty it is because my other three have been around Christmas trees for 3 plus years now. But it is my new little one, she is less than a year old. I have a shaker I use to keep her from doing bad things but what about when I am not there. Or don't see her being naughty. Can I use bitter apple or something. Preferably something light on the wallet.

Update:

OK, got the trees sprayed with lemon juice. And for one thing when my parents put their tree up they didn't hide and pick up all the hanging wires. So I went under there and tied them up in the branches. Then I sprayed the whole bottom tree.

Rub or spray lemon juice or orange juice on and around your tree. Cats hate citrus and will steer clear from any area that smells of it. Also keep a spray bottle handy with water and a few squeezes of lemon juice in it and spray your kitty with it whenever she is being naughty - it's not cruel and she won't hate you for it!

This is a major reason why I do not prefer open floor plans. I can seal off the living room of my New Orleans house from my cats. I haven't had a Christmas tree for over 10 years, but that's my personal choice, and it isn't because of cats.

The citrus things should work. You can get something to spray at grocery stores and pet stores

Cats hate citrus!! If there's a certain area in the house (ie: like the christmas tree) that you don't want kitty to go to, cover the area in citrus! you can spray the area with orange oils or leave orange peels or other citrus scented items in the area. the cats will stay away.

Source(s): my kitty hates it when i eat tangerines hehe

Right away I would get a spray bottle, fill with water, and spray her every time she plays with the lights, so she will associate the lights with getting sprayed with water, and won't even mess with it.

    Get rid of the lights.

The kitten could get electrocuted and possibly die.

    Could even cause a fire.

    THINK.
