How many people believe just because they're afraid to not believe?

Sure *YOU* believe, but what about the people around you? How many people are agreeing with what ever it is society believes because they're afraid to contradict the larger community?

Don't be so hard on your fellow man. Some people need the structure of an organization, not everyone is strong enough to form their own convictions without guidance. By your question, it seems clear that you are not one of these people but, it's important to be tolerant of everone's beliefs - and that doesn't mean compromising yours.

This is how society coheres. It relies on the majority going with the flow. If we all try to swim in different directions, everything fragments, people become isolated, depressed, neurotic, take refuge in drugs and booze ... hang about....

It's not a bad thing in itself for a society to have an all-embracing myth. "King and Country". "The American Dream". Trouble starts when the myth becomes grandiose, begins to pick fights with enemies. It happened under Hitler of course, but the "West is good/Commies are wicked" story that I grew up with wasn't too healthy either. Now another myth has collapsed: "Free Markets solve all our problems". It always takes a few brave/deviant/creative souls to challenge the prevailing story, but events often catch up with them and then we all realize how wise they were.

We used to have a story that said: gay people are perverts, what they do is disgusting, unnatural, and a menace to decent society. That gave comfort to the straight majority and meant they could feel good about using prostitutes, cheating on their partners, porn addiction etc. Now, that story is collapsing and we have a new one: gay is OK. Those who oppose it see themselves as warriors for truth while to the rest of us they are bigots. It depends - and I think there's a hint of this in the question - which side of the fence you're on.

Many here would agree however that the old story "you have to be a Christian or you're scum and you'll burn forever" was always unhealthy, it's on its last legs and we won't miss it a bit. Those of us who continue to be Christians need to tell the story in a different way.

I come from a very cosmopolitan city, where many people didn't attend church and I now live in a 'backwater' where just about everyone does. I do think fear has a lot to do with it, but also family ties, habits and social networks.

Probably most of society just believes what their friends and family believe. And you are wrong. I don't believe. I question everything constantly.
